Walmart - End of an Era

Pacerron, Don't forget none of today's cashiers can make change unless the computerized register tells them how much change to give. If ever the power goes out....business stops, it has happened to me once when I was checking out....I had to help the gal and show her how to count out change from the money tendered without the computer....Sad.

Not just in your area? Sort of like the Digital watch..Ask your grandchild what time it is with a regular round watch..Also how many guys learned to handle their money with a paper route? most of it delivered from a bicycle, except when Mom Helped you on a rainy day??GONE too??

I had a job over MANY years ago with a company making self check out systems. I turned down the job.

We had them at the grocery store. Hated it. It was buggy and simply did not work well. It was SLOW.

Our Lowes has self checkout. In spite of my dislike of the systems I tried it. I, aka the Self, in Self Checkout had to do the scans just right or it would not work. The cashier had to come over and help. Last time I used it.

I see some people using the scanners but not many.

The link about freeing up more people to help me in the store is BS. I don't need help in the store. I need help getting OUT of the store. Our Lowes staff is very friendly but I wish they would leave me alone. If I am trying to figure out a project I don't need to be interrupted a dozen times asking if I needs help. Leave me alone. I am a big boy and I know how to ask for help.

When they ask if they can help, I say, "Only if you can remember what I forgot." :laughing: Which is true and lets them go on their way after doing what the boss wants. Sometimes I think about making a sign that says, "Leave me alone I will ask for help." :laughing:

Our grocery store did a remodel. I still can't find stuff. They did not put in self checkout but they did the next worst thing. They changed the checkout lanes so the cashier HAS to scan and BAG. The Customer can only watch them work. I would always bag my own groceries. Now I cannot. I WANT to bag my groceries. Why? Because most cashiers can't bag groceries correctly. When I was a bag boy we had a manual and a "class" on how to bag. Obviously if cashiers learn to bag they forgot what they learned.

Bagging my own groceries was one reason I used the self checkout but the hassle with the system made it too slow. Now I have to let the cashier do it. At least they are better than some of the bag boys they used to have. Though some of the bag boys were really good. Some of them lived in a group of home for people with mental issues. THEY knew how to bag correctly. :thumbsup: But the new check out lane design allowed the store to fire all of those guys.

Is it settled that the greeters have been dismissed yet?

Our grocery store did a remodel. I still can't find stuff.

In 1977, we bought a new house. The closest business of any kind was a Safeway grocery store and it was really good store, even though it seemed a bit funny in a residential area. And then a year or so later, a new Tom Thumb grocery store opened across the street. So Safeway completely remodeled their store so, as you said, we couldn't find anything. And after about 6 months or less, Safeway closed up.

I agree with the ambiance (SP) of small store shopping 100%, but as far as the taxes, Walmart would pay way more than the ones you mention just in sales tax.

Well, the Walmart store isn't in my municipality so it would be all loss in terms of municipal taxes, with no local small stores, no local business people able to afford a house.
The local dump would do better though, all the cheap crap Walmart sells ends up there pretty quickly.:confused2:

I was surprised this morning to find the greeter that I've known for 6 years still there. Of course, he's now standing back by the produce instead of near the door. So he's really doing nothing, and for those who don't already know it, standing around one place doing nothing is about the hardest work I know of. I really think Walmart is trying to get them to quit so the company can say they didn't lay them off. And that's a guess with no evidence to back it up.

For the locals, it usually is a loss. Sales taxes go to the state, not the local village. And WM, because the size of the property, located outside of the village limits. So no property taxes to the village. And to get WM there, the county EDC gave WM a 50% reduction in property taxes for 12 years. But if you look at the services that have to be provided, it doesn't seem like a very good deal. EMS runs are done several times a day, they are open 24 hours. Police runs are very frequent also. Maybe after all the costs and bennies are totaled up, it is a win for the EDC, but it didn't come cheap.

Here in NY there is a statewide 4% tax that goes to the state and the rest (3.5 to 4 percent for the closest two counties) goes to the county.

I'm sorry for the ones who lost their jobs, but I won't mind there being no greeters - I prefer to be left alone to do my thing, shoot in get what I need & shoot out, & don't need a howdy or friendly smile to be able to do so :thumbsup: Call me unfriendly if you will :confused3:

We have self check out scanners at almost every store around here, and I much prefer using them than waiting in line for a person

I usually only have a dozen or so items and they work great
