I've not seen a Walmart Express, although I've been in a couple of "Neighborhood Markets" which, for those who are not familiar with them, are simply Walmart grocery stores.

Our supercenter is open 24 hours aday. It had 30 registers, that lasted about a year. they then, pulled the center reg. out and put in self scanners???I resisted at first as one attendant handled 6 of them..But now due to lines we scan our own if it is practical. There are 6 fast---less than 20 items--lines, 3 on each end..Sometimes i duck out the auto dept. reg. if i only shopped the back of the store..Auto ,sport goods.ect....

I hope we can get that option. Kroger had it for a few years and pulled the self scanners for some reason.

Our trek a couple times a month to the nearest Walmart Super Center is usually earlier in the day. We get there around the " Ra, Ra, Ra meeting time of the employees. After that most seem to dissapear. There are 25-30 registers but never more than 1 human one at each end, if that. I clerk watches over the "do it yourself" machines and is usually busy trying to get them to work for the folks that try them.
Sometimes a human register in the middle if they don't turn it off and dissapear while your getting there.
Most big marketers have had the less than 20 items register for years. I still fail to see the logic of rewarding people that buy a few dollars worth of stuff with quick service while making people that have carts with hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise stand in line and wait for 10-15 minutes to get out.

Some of the Walmarts in this area have self scanners and some do not. I don't know how they decide which ones to put them in. The nearest Home Depot has the self scanners and I use them because otherwise it's usually a long wait to get checked out.

I disagree. Walmart (and other big box stores as well) didn't "single-handedly killed off Main Street America", so-called "Main Street" committed suicide.

While none of the Walmarts here are the super WMs (ie-no grocery store), they are open late 7 days a week. This in contrast to downtown merchants who are generally open M-F 8-5 and maybe Saturday morning...not very convenient for someone who works for a living.
.

I agree. I get off work later than 90% of the business's I need to shop at are open.. menaing I have to use lunch hour to hit them.

very inconvienient.

nice to be able to get off work at 10pm thru 1am and be able to hit a 'real store' on the way home...

our local store was 24 lines, 4 of which are the express 10 item jobs on the end. 1st one is a 20 item line, plus smokes.. no self checkout lines.. though we could use a few. of the other 19 lanes.. I've never seen more than a couple open.. IMHO.. a waste / cost if they are not gonna be staffed. at another local store, during rush time., I have seen as many as half the registers staffed, with lines 10-12 people long.. again.. why the extra registers?

Our Super sized Kroger has at least 6 selfscanners, and always two or more humans, plus service center attendant...WM has at least 6-8 scanners. Plus the tobacco spot, the garden center on the end, and the automotive store...Usually about 8 other humans in the front section, our store is the only super WM store for 30 miles.

I like the Lowes system... More than 3 people in line and they open another register (calling a Code 50 if needed to get another cashier).

our lowes has 4 of those self serve registers.. ok for bagged parts with sku #'s.. not good for bulk hardware, lumber or custom stuff.. but heck.. never any waiting cuz nobody uses them. :)
