vista laptop - security center empty, firewall not on, can't update, add/remove prog

/ vista laptop - security center empty, firewall not on, can't update, add/remove prog #22
My vista on hp used to have a Windows Defender (microsoft product) that was handy- it was built in. I bet if you did a search for it you'd find it already in the computer ready to go. I use Norton 360 (virus program/pay for it) but it likes to handle some of the firewall. It does a good job. Something should be doing the job of the firewall.

Goodluck with it.

Ya.. if theres no auto updates, Defender wont work. Sounds like you got a nice one that shut down all the things that could stop it.. Fun.

SFC might still work if the 386 folder was copied onto the hd.

Run Malewarebytes too..

This is an HP isnt it..? They quit giving you OS disk for a long time. Now they do again I believe. I got a Win8 disk with my Samsung laptop, soo..

True enough, this is why it seems best to run multiple ones to clean it. One seems to remove some stuff and another other stuff. This is why I've had good luck with the 2 I mentioned. If memory serves me, if Malwarebytes finds something it will restart the o/s and run before the crapola can start. There's another one I've used for the real nasty rootkit stuff but I can't remember what it was. It sounds like this dudes PC needs to be locked down more.

I have no clue how / why he even turned off the firewall to beginwith??

in any case. i just ran the MS fix it..wouldn't run. tried the offline fix it where you download fix it to a removeable media drive on a clean computer and then walk it over...then run it. still would not run ;)

If this is a nasty that is causing this, it can be a real pain to get rid of. These morons writing this stuff go to great length to block anything that would fix the problem. I would suggest booting into safe mode and running Malawarebytes and/or MS malicious software removal tool to try and remove the nasty. Once it is gone then see what you have and try to repair if need be.
