Vise restoration

Wow, I thought I was having a flash back from the 60's there for a minute.:cool2:

Digital cameras are unforgiving sometimes. Even though I voted for hammered black it will look good. It's not to late to change it!!!! Oh well maybe it is.

Thought about going all grey but after the 3rd coat of orange finally starting to come around!

At first thought I questioned the idea of Orange, but after seeing it, I like it! Makes the vise I have, that appears to duplicate yours, look very ordinary in the battleship gray paint that came on it. If I ever decide to repaint this one I have, Orange will be at the top of the list.

Yeah it's bright! I was tempted to go all kubota grey but fought the temptation and once assembled I like it also!

I have rebuilt many pieces of farm equipent--some detailed on TBN--and still feel warm and fuzzy every time I walk by. Little know secret is that I have a quart each of (factory) Kubota Orange II and Kubota Gray for some pending project yet unnamed. What is your next project?

Well I do have too many to name but a few pending are to sand blast and paint a boat trailer (no it won't be orange) currently white but may switch to black.

A 3x4 welding table is also high on the list.

You should mount that vice in a corner so you can spin it 90 degrees. Also you may want to move the base so you can put a piece of steel in the jaws past the work top. Good job..

For bigger projects that you don't want to sandblast you can scrub--degrease--with a brush and dishwashing soap and prime with Rustoleum Rusty Metal primer. Then paint with good paint and use a $39 (sale for $25) harbor Freight HVLP paintgun. Piece of cake and works great. Here;s a couple examples.

I love restoring stuff and admire those--and you--that do. Were it my last day on earth, I might want to finsih a restoration project.

What's the reason that you are not using it? Building new workbench for it. I have owned this for maybe 15 years and have seriously beat the tar out of it. And that was on a good day. Never broke it, though. Look close and you can see it's wispering "Uncle".

Researched a little and this link is the answer Don't get too emotional...mine is an early Harbor Freight vise that is a faithful copy of a many hundred $$ vise.That Sears ad is likely a re-seller of merchandise and it is common for them to put an outrageous price on items. This has been discussed in the "Harbor Freight tools that don't suck " thread on TBN. It is a great and stout vise that is built like a tank and you will leave to your grandchildren. Write the date and sign your name on the bottom since that's how long it should last.

That is an exceptional price. I don't know why but sometimes vised go really cheap at auctions and sometimes really high. Must be Karma so keep it up.

Glad my father found it for me, glad I restored/modified to Kubota orange. Should last a long time

Like I said in an earlier post that included photos, I have the same vise and have repeatedly wailed on it for more than 10 years with a 3 lb sledge with no ill effects. It's heavy, and mine isn't as pretty as yours but yours will likely outlive you. Nice paint job on yours.

being the subject is revised Does anyone know much about the old black iron stump vise's I think is what they're called? could be ( Post Vise ) But in any case I have 2 of them, a small and large one, said to be very old,collectable and expensive, although I had one of these (smaller one) loaned to me about 30 years ago from a older gent who had it hand down to him from his dad, It was loaned to me until I could buy one of my own, The man pass away a few years later and I still have the vise, I ran accross another in a yard sale a couple years ago and bought it for 20.00 .... I have both mounted to my work benches,

Joining in a little late here - I just ran across this thread - but I also have that exact same vise. It's pretty dirty; I need to clean it up and paint it. But it works fine. I want to make a little table with wheels for it.
