Here's a link to prices for mini DV players at Best Buy: Link.

I would also take a look at reviews on Amazon before you make a final decision. If you decide you want a mini DV version, I would recommend the DCR-HC48.

I just got JVC with HD from Costco - it was a Mother's day present - and so far I am impressed.

Jarret,

A few years ago we bought a Sony camcorder that records to the DV tapes. I thought I wanted to just write to the DVD but after reading up on the different formats, the tape was the way to go.

You will have to edit the tape. It does take time and it can be frustrating. The software I use I think came with the camera and "ease of use" is a phrase that the developers have never heard. The concepts where pretty easy to figure out but get the software to do what you want was frustrating. A lot of bugs. And the software was supposed to be pretty good according to the reviews

But its dooable and you figure it out pretty quick. I sit down a couple times a year a burn a DVD or two for us and family. The real reason to do all of this is not for today but for the future viewing with the kids and their kids....

I bought 250GB USB drive to store the video as I worked. I need another one for the still camera as well. The external drives look like you can get a 500GB for what I paid for a 250GB a few years ago. The nice things about the the tapes is that you do have the as a backup. I don't overwrite them since we only use a dozen or so a year at most.

Later,
Dan

one of the channels that sells stuff 24-7 had a canon DC210 on this wk-end:
it uses mini dvd's, and cost $350: it came with 50 of the dvd's..of course they always make things look easier than it really is, but it did look nice!

Thanks everyone for the information/recommendations. I ended up buying the Sony DCR-HC38 MiniDV. I like it so far. I've only shot a couple things so far: my daughter's baptism, riding my daughter on the Kubota for the first time ;) and a few other small things.

Jarrett, I've been looking at that one too. My son wants to do this and is saving his money. I'll help him out some. Keep us posted on how you like it.

For those of you who don't know, all current Apple computers come with iMovie and iDVD which makes editing movies and burning DVDs a pleasure.

We still have a 15 year old Sony 8mm. Does anyone make an analog-to-digital convertor for getting those movies onto the computer?

Most digital video cameras can do this...you can either transfer the 8mm tape onto digital tape or use the digital camera to transfer the 8mm to computer. I know my Sony TVR digital video camera does this.
