Vetical Exhaust Install

I remember seeing some threads regarding the advantages/diadvantages of the vertical exhaust kit. I have been considering getting one for my 4320. It seems like it will be an easy install, but I am wondering how I am going to cut out the hole in the hood. Does anyone know the trick to doing this cleanly and easily? Thanks.

Chris, I did the vertical exhaust on the 3520/cab tractor. Its very easy with the right tools. The install was posted on TBN. I did a search for it and was not able to locate it. Private Message me with your email and I can send you the install pics and directions.

As far as cutting the hood, its real simple with the proper sized hole saw.

ChrisJD4320 - I'm curious..why do you want to switch? Does this decrease your ground clearance. The reason I ask is that I have the horizontal exhaust on my 5325 and have not had any issues as it is above the undercarriage.

Hi Chris

I bought the vertical exhaust when I purchased my 3520. It took a while for the kit to arrive so I told the dealer that I would install it myself. The dealer's shop people asked if I wanted them to drill the hole for me. They showed me where to drill but I had them do the work. If you look under the hood over the exhaust area you will see two circles molded into the hood. The holes overlap. The circles are the guides for drilling. Caution...note two circles. They said one set is for the 3X20 series and the other is for the 4X20 series. They must use the same hood. Go to your dealers and have them show you which is which before you dill. Once drilled you own the hole where ever it is and that is an expensive hood to replace.

However, once you are sure of the correct hole placement use a regular hole saw of the right diameter and drill away. The kit contains a rubber gasket to cover the edge of the hole. After that there is one bolt on the bottom pipe to remove and the u-joint to back off to remove the pipe. The kit also contains a new u-joint for some reason. Once the pipe is installed and the hood is closed the top piece drops down through the hole onto the pipe stub. The pipe stub is cone shaped and the top pipe is very secure.

You can point it in four directions. Ahead, back, left or right. I really like the vertical exhaust. The loader stays clean and it seems to me that there is a little less noise. (That could just be me telling myself that, but it makes me happy to belive that )

I installed my vertical exhaust about 2 months ago. Like others have said, the opening is marked on the underside of the hood. Use the correct template for your series. I used a keyhole saw. I think it was a 3.5" but don't quote me on that. The instructions will give the hole measurement in MM's but use the nearest size in inches and the rubber gasket will fit but very snug in the opening. The instructions are otherwise straight forward.

I've got a 4320 as well and was thinking about installing a vertical exhaust as well, but I was wondering how the hood flips up once you install it. Is there some sort of coupling under the hood? A few people have asked why people would want to install one, and for me the reason is that you tend to breathe in a lot of the exhaust when you're using the machine. The vertical exhaust would put the exhaust over my head and not in my face.

The top piece simply sits down over the bottom piece. The bottom piece is tapered and has a indexing tab on it. The top piece has four slots at 90 degrees that go down over the tab. These slots give the four positions the top pipe can be directed to. Straight forward, left, right or straight back. Since it sits on this cone shape bottom pipe it does not need clamps. It just lifts off when you want to open the hood. And you just drop it back on the cone after you close the hood.

Thanks for everyone's input. My reasons for wanting the kit are to get the exhaust out of my face and maybe to quiet the tractor down a bit. Also I think it makes it look more like a "tractor" in a traditional sense. Can someone tell me the height of the installed exhaust? My tractor is stored in my garage and I have to fold my ROPS to put it away. I'm not sure if I want to fold the ROPS AND take off the exhaust pipe everytime I use it.

I wouldn't expect the vertical exhaust to help much with the the noise factor.

Chris,on my 3520 top piece of the exhaust pipe itself is 29 inches. When on the tractor it is 27-1/2 inches above the hood. Ground to top of exhaust when installed is 76 inches.I have the smaller R-4's. Your tire size and type will make some difference. Hope that helps. I know what your saying about forgeting to take it off before pulling into the garage.

So the vertical exhaust is basically a 2 piece affair?
Does the top part stay with the hood and open with it, or do you just yank the muffler out before opening?
How good is the sealing betwen the halves?

I wanted to do this on my 3520 but shy'd away thinking it interfered with the hood operation. If it's split and seals well, I think I'll go for it as I agree that it just looks more "Tractor" with the vertical exhaust.

The top part just lifts off and then you open the hood.

Seems to be a very good fit. I have never smelled and exhaust fumes.

It does seal well and does not shake when it's on because the lower piece is a cone shape which keeps the top firmly in place. And I too like the "tractor" look.
