UTV or SCUT - New Land Owner and First Time Buyer

Owning a JD Gator diesel 4x4 I can say this unit has done lots of work for me, but it's no tractor. There are more useful UTV's than mine perhaps but I like the smooth ride and the fact I can disconnect the front drive and one rear wheel just by flipping a switch and lever, same as a car does and not tear up the grass. The dump box is a real work and time saver for us and not something I'd be without if getting another. Like others have said, get the tractor first and for all the heavy work then the UTV for lighter work.

Definitely tractor. You can buy a golf cart to scoot around with but the UTV will never do the work a tractor and loader will and you will get into it. Also, you need more than a SCUT - 35hp or so with FWA and Loader and back blade at a minimum.

Pretty consistent opinions here, for good reason. Your chore list tilts heavily to work where the machine needs some heft and pulling/pushing/lifting power. That's a tractor, not a UTV... even a beefed-up version. The UTV can work well for snow plowing, but otherwise it's a cinch a tractor will be much more effective in getting your work done.

I'd also agree that your amount of property will most likely bring you challenges better met with a bigger tool than the 25 hp setup you're looking at.

Tractor- a good quality tractor will work harder, and last a lot longer doing heavy work than a UTV. While my UTV does do a lot of work it is not close to the amount the tractor can and does do.

Hi All -

Thank you everyone for the insight, options and opinions. I have taken the Brutus out of the mix and now I'm down to the following tractor options.

1) 2016 LS XG3032H
2) 2016 McCormick X1.35 ($300 more than the LS)

The MCormick is more heavy duty but is not offered with hydrostat and the engine does not have turbo.

I'm looking forward to making a decision soon and getting started.

I agree with Grandad. You could tear up a nice UTV trying to do the work it wasn't designed for. Tractor all the way for that work and I also agree you probably want to go bigger than a SCUT... But if you $$$ is limited a SCUT is better than nothing. You will find that 35 acres pretty useless until you have a tractor.

$300 is nothing over the life of a tractor 1000 lbs is - go with the McCormick - you will appreciate the extra tractor.
