using larger valve on small tractor

Hi I have a larger older Gresen 2 spool valve that was used on a medium sized loader. Although I'm not sure of its GPM rating (I think its around 25) I would like to use it on my small tractor (which is a lot less than 25) to run a hydraulic top-n-tilt. Also I would want to tap into the PB on a smaller valve already on the tractor to run this valve. Would this setup work okay. Thanks. Gerry

Well the passages and design openings on a larger valve, are just that, larger. Too big a valve on too small a system will seem more like an on off valve instead of a variable flow control. This causes you to loose some fine control. I have a 25GPM loader vlave on a 5GPM system, and I know when I am lowering a heavy load in the bucket, I have to be very carefull as It is hard to bring it smoothly to a stop and I can easilly stop it too quickly(hard on the structure).

For a top and tilt, I think you might want very fine control to make small movements, and this might be harder with a large valve, than one sized closer to the system's flow.

Thanks Ron Thats a great point about the fine control. I better save the valve for something else. Maybe I'll use it for the logsplitter I want to make, one side for splitting and the other for a log lift. It won't have auto return but I can probably manage without that. Gerry

If you can get the valve cheap, adding a restrictor to the lines going to the cylinders will make it act like a smaller one.
