using glow plugs at start

The owner's manual for our new Mahindra 5555 says that glow plugs are optional. We do not have them. The manual says a light will come on when the glow plugs are warming up and when the light goes off the tractor will be ready to start. Do I need glow plugs here in East Texas?

An aside, my wife's emission cheating turbo diesel Jetta has another clever feature. When the driver door handle is lifted the glow plugs begin warming up. By the time the driver is settled in the seat and turns the key it is ready to start.

The 5555 uses an intake heater, sort of like a big single glow plug in the intake manifold. Regarding the Jetta, both the door handle and the emissions, those German engineers are clever for sure.

Once it is warmed up, you don't need to use the glow plugs.

I always use them when cold. Generally get a start with about 1/2 rotation of the crankshaft when you do so. Otherwise, you can crank it a bit before it starts. Been running diesels for 38 years.

See previous post. Many people can not seem to tell the difference between an open combustion chamber using an intake manifold heater . Vs an indirect combustion chamber using glow plugs.
Not the same . Not interchangable terms .

We still have people here at work that don't understand glow plugs. They jump into the Kubota 900 or 1100 and turn the key to crank. And keep grinding until the engine starts or the battery is dead.
The indirect Kubota's start ok when still warm from being previously operated . If they do eventually start in winter without waiting for the glow plugs to heat. There are billowing clouds of smoke and the engine knocks/hammers.

To paraphrase a line from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance:
"To use glow plugs, must have peace of mind."

Mine is automatic. If air temp is below 32 then it cycles thru the glow plugs. If the coolant temp is above - 85 to 90 - then is starts w/out the glow plugs, no matter the air temp.
