This does become a problem. If you don't know yourself and or don't know anybody that you can trust, then purchasing used equipment takes on a new perspective. I would have to say that that would limit me to a dealer that would have some sort of warranty on their used equipment.

Yep, and that costs money over and above what the machine is probably worth. For my uses and needs (versus wants ) , the risk/reward is out of balance, meaning I don't need construction equipment bad enough to risk buying scrap iron.

A steel tracked excavator plumbed for a thumb is the tool of choice around here. Like a CAT 307, minimum. From watching ads and talking to others, I would guess to buy one that has some life left in it would be $25K and up.
