Congrats on your new toy...I mean tool. Let me know how those tires are on your lawn. I have the same unit only with turfs. Sometimes in the mud i wish i had the ag tires, but my lawn is soft and i thought they might tear it up bad. Have fun be safe she's got some balls as you'll find out soon enough!

Thanks Again to you gentlemen!!!! I got a better chance to play today. This Tractor is Awesome. I had a pile of topsoil at the end of the yard that was my first conquest. Being the Idiot I am I ran the tractor out there in High range, and forgot to change , and stalled the tractor. When I came to my senses, and went in to low range, the loader, and tractor were great. I also ran the MMM to make sure it worked. Wow is that something. The only thing that is a bit of a problem is starting the tractor. I go to the glow plug, and when the light goes out the tractor still doesn't start most times. What am I doing wrong???? I've tried almost everything, from playing with the neutral stick to holding back on the PTO levers. The PTO thing worked to better results. Anyway thanks again guys. Happy Guy in PA. Kent PS Sorry I forgot I bought the truck first. I didn't buy the tractor to match it, but sometimes things work out that way.

Steelfan, try starting the tractor without using the glow plugs. At the temperatures we're getting in PA, you probably won't need the plugs.
Make sure the fuel filter is tight...you might be getting just a bit of air in the lines.
Once it starts, is it running smoothly (for a small diesel...they won't run as smooth as a gas engine)?
If it is running smoothly and no problems other then the hard starting, you could have a carboned up glow plug.

When you say it's hard to start, do you mean the starter doesn't turn the engine, or is the starter working and the engine slow to catch? In other words, what does it do? It seems to me that the other responses are assuming (and perhaps correctly) that the starter is turning the engine, but if doing something with the PTO levers has anything to do with it, that would seem to be an entirely different matter.

Very nice looking tractor.

Are you pushing in on the key when you turn it to start the engine? (I assume that the TC21D starts the same way that the TC33D does). The only problem that I have had in starting my tractor is that the neutral (starting) position between I and II is sometimes hard to find.

Never saw one on a tractor (other then mine...oil changes etc., never worked on a tractor), but on a Mercedes Benz 240 and 300 Diesels, we'd get glow plugs that were carboned up...don't remember the exact root cause (I was working at the shop to afford parts for an old Porsche i owned a few years back). The way it was described to me, the glow plug wouldn't heat the cylinder properly if they were caked up...heck, they all looked caked up to me. But the fix was to replace them. That always worked. This was also on high mileage engines, though.The lead mechanic always blamed this on cruddy fuel. We could try cleaning them with solvent...not too successful.
Steelfan's TC21 seems to be too new (or too few hours may be a better description) for this....but there is only a few things that will prevent a diesel from starting: no fuel (air leaking in system?), no air (filter clogged?), cylinder not making enough compression, the engine being off time, starter not cranking fast enough (check battery) or the glow plug or plugs not doing there job. Steelfan's tractor is starting, but not fast enough. First thing to check is to make sure air isn't entering the fuel system (most logical possibility is the fuel filter). Then, is the glow plugs doing there job? Pull them out and test them (need the manual). Compression? Engine should be down on power, or you could run a compression test (let a dealer do this unless you want to buy the equipment...diesel compression is too high to just hold the tester in the glow plug hole...these testers screw in).
That's about all one would want to check at home, unless you're a mechanic and knowledgable about diesels. DO NOT (!!!!) DO ANYTHING WITH THE INJECTION PUMP!!!!
Steelfan just bought the tractor...I'd call the dealer first (did you get a warranty, Steelfan?).
This is, in all likelyhood, a minor problem. There's only a few things one can try at home...or fix at home.

Thanks for everything Guys. I maybe should have done a better job of describing the problem. When I turn the key to the Glow Plug position, the glow plug is to ready the tractor for starting. When tractor is ready, you turn the key one more notch to start it. At this point 1 out of 5 times the tractor fires right up. The other 4 times nothing happens, but the glow plug light comes back on. There are a few things that need to be right when starting this tractor, as stated earlier the shifter must be in the Neutral position. That is kind of hard to tell about. There seems to be a small area on the shifter for Neutral. The other thing is PTO levers must be completely off. When I watched the dealer start the tractor he seemed to fool with these levers when starting tractor. I must be honest and tell you this is my first experience with this kind of tractor. The salesman at the dealer started the tractor on the first or a least second try everytime. The pushing in of the key wasn't mentioned in my manual, but I'll try it today. My problem is that I don't think there is anything wrong with the tractor, I think its me. I need to find out what I'm not getting right. Thanks again to all you Gentlemen. Nothing as in the starter also doesn't turn the engine over... absolutely dead...??? that kind of nothing...

If so, I'd say an out of alignment/fussy/intermittent safety interlock switch...

The unit is just too new for anything serious...

Nothing but the glow plug light comes back on. When the tractor starts it pops right off. Its like something if you would have a dead battery , but the battery's is fine. All the lights work, I'm assuming there are safety switches that could cause the dead thing. Another possibility. I'm calling the dealer today to see if I'm doing something wrong. I got the remainer of the warranty for new. 1 year on engine, and drivetrain. Thanks again John. Kent

You're welcome, Kent. I'm not sure, but think your tractor has some things in common with mine; you must have the PTO off, transmission in neutral, and the clutch depressed before the starter can be engaged. So if any one or more of those switches is not aligned and working properly, no go. And from what you've said, it sounds to me like it's just the one for the PTO; just need to find that switch and get it properly aligned, I'll bet. And of course, the dealer should be able to do that easily.

With the information you have given... the Glowplug circuit is NOT the problem...

For a quick test... {realize I don't know all your safety interlock switch locations on your tractor}

The very next time it happens {dead-no start}... while you keep the ignition switch turned in the on position... with your other hand, wiggle the PTO lever, then the hi/lo range lever {if it's has one}, your hydro-stat forward/reverse peddle, move your body around on the seat {if it has a seat/presence switch}... and also the "ignition switch" itself...

You actually have a very simple problem to fix... these safety switches are all in "series"... they "all" must be closed for B+ to engage the solenoid on the starter...

Armed with the "basic" starting/wiring block diagram/schematic you can fix this... and using a simple ohmmeter you'd must have "continuity" across each interlock switch.. if you don't use a "test jumper" across the switch to confirm the faulty switch {only if you understand your wiring... otherwise don't just jump wires/switches out and cause a mini-disaster...}

I'm confident you'll fix this fast... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thanks again!!!! I called the dealer , and he said the PTO lever are sometimes the problem. He said that bumping the PTO levers will most times do the trick. He said the safety switches are sensitive on the PTO levers on this model. He also said to let him know if it becomes a problem. So I assuming maybe New Holland knows about the problem also. It is most likely the saftey switch is out of adjustmant. I had this problem with mine. Acts like a dead battery, but if i wiggle the high low lever she grabs and starts. I had my dealer adjust it, but it still does it now and then, but not as often. I have the same model you do.
