I wouldn't pay more than $900 or so for one with 50 acres on it, and that is assuming the tines are worn out. You could take the side panel off (would drain the oil) and examine the side gears, but who knows about the main gearbox.

I would look at the tines and if they are worn I would pass at that price. I got my 6' KKII for about 1500. If you have to put tines on you will take a beating.

find the tine cost, deduct for wear, then deduct for usage. might be able to get a fair middle ground between the two.

I think you guys have confirmed it for me. I think I will wait until they go on sale at Fleet Farm and apply for their card for an additional 10% off and then I will have a 5' KK tiller for sale that is in very good shape and has always been stored inside.
