Does anyone know what brand/ model # of spreader this may be? I gave $300 for it and it broke on the second load. It works fine, just needs some frame reinforcements and a few parts. I can make most of what I need but there is an idler missing and a part to lift the chain of the sprocket that I would like to buy or replicate if I can.

Thanks,

I'm guessing New Holland, maybe a 300 series, built in 1953.

My first reaction was New Holland also.(paint colors) After looking closer, I see a few things that remind me of International Harvester. Look closly at any castings for part #'s. That can be a good indicator.

My guess is a new idea.

looks very similar to my new idea. there should be a tag of some sorts up near the front, if its a new idea. the only thing i would be wary of is the condition of the apron chain, if it wasn't well kept it may last only a few loads. i would def load it light the 1st few loads. some of the old spreaders have an odd type of apron chain, they can be a pain to work w/ and find parts for. once you get it back into working shape and use it i would def oil the chains and wood sides/floor after every use, its the saving grace for the older spreaders esp if it sits outside.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've got a friend that picked up a well kept Allis Chalmers (PTO drive). One thing though, the floor is rotted thru. What's the best way to replace the flooring??/ By the way, it looks like a New Idea to me as well...Thanks, BobG in VA

BobG,

Mine has a thick oak floor that for its age is in very good shape. I would not want a metal floor. My chains are a little rusty but everything works just fine.

Thanks to all for the help so far. It did have a small tag on the front of the frame, but it has been painted over several times and I couldn't get any information off of it. I oiled and greased it big time before I used it, but the frame broke taking it across the field on the second load. I plan on tearing it down between Thanksgiving and Christmas and restoring it to good working order. The one load I did spread came out great......just had to be a bummer and break after that. I knew it would need some work when I bought it, just not right away. It needs a new floor too...so when I do it all, I'll just go through it. Some friends of mine own a nice fab shop and they already told me to bring it on in. I help them out sometimes and get free use of the shop whenever I need it. They make hay unrollers and have all kinds of access to chains and sprockets, etc.....
I'll keep you posted and update the redo pictures when I get er done.

Thanks again,
James
