Ultimate Lowlife Scam

A scam like this at a time like that, lot of people would've been taken to the cleaners, least they didn't get you, thanks for sharing.

Some folks are truly low life. This is just another reason my cell phone, my ONLY phone, is always OFF. I turn it on in the evening to see if any messages were left that are worth returning. That gives me all night to mull any message that was recorded and determine if I really want to call them back.

For those that don't know. The Caller Id you see on your display, can be easily "spoofed" to say anything and display any number." It is very easy to do for anyone that knows how to program a PBX. I won't go into details on how to do it, lest it give people ideas, but rest assured, Caller ID is absolutely no security that the person you are talking to is from that legitimate business. Yes these people are lowlifes of the first order. They don't care who they hurt, they just want to make a dishonest buck.

Yep, caller ID is easily spoofed. Don't trust it. Some people in our local mountain community have been getting calls "from" well-known and liked local citizens. Most of our phone spam is "from" the local area code and sometimes our mountain exchange. We rarely answer our land line.

It's illegal to spoof caller ID it for deceptive purposes (whatever that means legally) but it's very widespread and getting worse.

This not a telemarketer. While I am not fan of telemarketers there is a far cry from interrupting my dinner to sell me product x and this outright attempt at criminal behavior.

You are correct, there are various levels of "telemarketers" and "Sue Lopez" should have been locked up.

Preying on those who have lost loved ones is really not much different than the age old tactic of perpetrators who read the obituaries and rob peoples houses when they are at the services etc...

One has to wonder, if truly motivated to do so, the phone companies could stop this type of scam. Same goes for the email scams.

It could be stopped. BUT, it would be a real hardship on millions of PBX lines in service that allow and Utilize DID. It would be a major upheaval in the way things work.
