Not to be nit picky but before you start to dump on me please take a look at the statement I was replying to. I am not trying to dismiss the question at all, just pointing out that the ULSD subject has been discussed to death and that more accurate information can be found in another place here on TBN.

BTW, since you brought it up or should i say implied it in your statement, is there something inferior or inherently problematic about chinese engines that they wouldn't run on ULSD, seeing as though they are 2007 EPA compliant which means that they are designed to use the new fuel to reduce emissions? Or even with old engines are they so inferior that ULSD will not work well even though the industry has said there should be minimal to no problems with any engine? Inquiring minds would like to know.

That sir, is what I'm trying to find out. The Chinese have proven exceptionally adept at seizing loopholes in the EPA regs for imports. Specifically, the issue of using on-road ULSD in my off-road scenario has not been addressed.

Let me try to rephrase yet again. I am not in a position to buy off-road (untaxed) diesel, because having my own storage tank is not cost-effective. Starting soon, that forces me to buy on-road (taxed) USLD. For my Mercedes and for my KAMA - no problem, I'll use additives. I accept that. But if I bought a 2007 Chinese tractor - that claims to have an EPA-approved engine - would I be able to use on-road USLD straight from the pump? Or must additives be used in them as well.

It was my expectation that the most accurate response would come from one who actually sells Chinese tractors for a living.

That's what I have been waiting to see why ULSD would not fire in any diesel engine. ????

Greg, just add additive and you won't have to worry about it one way or other, like I do,,,,one container,[think I use power service] will last you about all year,[or longer],,,I mean if you can't buy the old sulpher desil anymores, whats your choice,[if that is indeed the case??],,,,,,,thingy

I've been buing & using the on-road since my tractor was new in 02, and never thought about it not being good enough lube/sealing properties but seeing the new sticker on ONE of the pumps I used to use made me wonder if I should find some additive too>? where do you all that ARE using it get it and at what costs? I didn't know if TSC, Wally world or have to go to auto parts supplier ?

Thanks mark

I buy mine at an auto parts store, there are different kinds of power service,,make sure you get the one thats for desil,,says what its for on container,,it ain't real cheap,,but forget,,,one jug treats 500 gal I think?,,says how much on jug,,comes in about 32 oz size or something like that,,mainly used for anti jelling, but says it lubricates too, etc,,,thingy

Mark,
I use Power Service. It comes in a white or silver bottle. They both give additives but the white bottle also provides an anti-gel/bavterial. You can get it at Pep Boys, Napa, Wallmart, just about anywhere.

Why would you think it wouldn't work? The manufacturers say it's compatable with all engines. The "new" (American made) engines seem to REQUIRE this ULSD to run right because I'm sure they're made differently than before.

****, I'd guess the Chinese engines would run on ANYTHING. Do you think the JD or Massey or Ford manuals tell you about rain water? How about running your oil through a screen? I'm sure Chinese diesel sucks compared to that found here. I'm sure they will run fine on the new fuel.

Didn't they need to be tested with the new fuel to meet the EPA standard?

Talk to your Chinese Tractor importer and see if they can import the correct diesel fuel you need from China, they will be real happy to sell whatever they have.

The rest of your sarcasm notwithstanding, this question proves you too missed my point. There have always been two sets of EPA standards: on-road and off- road. I'm wanting to know if the 2007 on-road ULSD (25 ppm) can be used without additives in a 2007 Chinese diesel that's got an EPA approved off-road engine.

Based upon the Tier 4 implementation chart, I think the answer is no. But I'd like somebody closer to the source to confirm/refute my interpretation.
Proposed Tier 4 Emission Standards (grams/horsepower-hour)*
Rated Power First Year that Standards Apply PM NOx less than 25 hp 2008 0.30 -- equal to or more than 25, but less than 75 2013 0.02 3.5* equal to or more than 75, but less than 175 2012-2014 0.02 0.30 equal to or more than 175, but less than 750 2011-2013 0.01 0.30 greater than or equal to 750 2011-2014 0.01 0.30
