I'd agree with that, but that doesn't change the physics of space travel....
I wasn't debating space travel that would give me an aneurysm

"Star Wars" was "Long ago in a galaxy far, far away."

It took this long for the broadcast stories to reach us at the speed of light.

I'm most amazed that they spoke English. It must really be a universal language.

I'm curious if anyone on TractorByNet has any opinions on UFO's. I find the subject fascinating. And not from the wild sensational side... But from a scientific, data based point of view.

Things like the Nazca Lines in Peru and UFO accounts from reputable sources like Air Force pilots, etc really add validity to the claims of UFOs.

So what do you all think? Truth or tall tales?
The closest stars with planets revolving around them are over 10 light years away. The distance is too great to travel. Due to the number of stars and then galaxies there is likely life elsewhere. The life may be intelligent or pond scum. They will never see us and we will never see them.

I'm not gonna post a link, but maybe some of you have seen the SNL alien abduction interviews? If not, look them up on youtube.

I have all confidence that rural folk tastes better. No one ever got teleported from Chicago.

Actually, they have discovered a planet around one of the closest stars to ours, Proxima Centauri, around 4.3 light years away. It's not habitable though.

I'm thinking I wish they'd hurry up and get here. I've been waiting for my ride home for a few decades now after crash landing in that guy's garage.

And the answer is: Yes it is.
A light-year is a measurement of distance and not time (as the name might imply). A light-year is the distance a beam of light travels in a single Earth year, which equates to approximately 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers). (Wikipedia)

If you travel through space 9.7 trillion kilometers at the speed of light, you have traversed both a distance and a time. I'll stand by my previous answer.

You travel through time as well? Time travel?

I don't want to lose a friend debating this.

No time travel, just takes that long for light or radio waves to get there. If we look at something 4.3 light years away we're seeing it 4.3 years ago. It's why we're 'looking into the past' when we observe another galaxy, star, or planet because it's that far away. btw, we're taught that the Sun is ~ 7 'light-minutes' from Earth.

Don't forget Time Dilation...

Is this "Time Travel? That depends on one's frame of reference. The concept is mind-boggling, isn't it?

So, you follow the science and believe that the Sun you see is always 7 minutes old. And the stars in the night sky are from the years gone by. And even the goddam moon is not in the present? And we evolved from apes.

Give me a rosary. I thought my grandma was crazy. Her beliefs make more sense and serve a practical purpose.

Aliens are nothing more than demons which is why people smell sulfur in their hallucinations.
