I did a bit more work on this idea today. I designed a simple device to see how the u nail would deform. I drew it in pro engineer and my brother cut it out for me on a cnc plasma. Tomorrow I will adapt it to put a nail through two tyres to see how strong a joint it forms. Thanks to all for your help and suggestions on this so far.

I thought it would take a few failed attempts before you perfected it. Apparently I was wrong. That staple is perfect.
