A LOT cheaper. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I preferred the air powered because I did all my lubrication in my shop building, but if you do it "in the field" then those battery charged ones are really nice. My brother sold a lot of them to mechanics who did on site service work.

Not when you add in the cost of buying an air compressor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: types of grease guns.. what\'s easiest?

Mike, I am not sure about that, It does not take a big air compressor to run a grease gun. But you are probably right. However if you already have a compressor and do most of your greasing at your shop as I do, then I think it would be a good choice. Also the air powered runs hold gallons of grease, no frequent cartridge changes /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I have an air powered one, not sure of the cost as it was given to me.
I also have a good manual pump grease gun for the small amount of mobile work I might do.

Re: types of grease guns.. what\'s easiest?

I like my air powered grease gun too. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Spent $12 on it at Harbor Freight - works great. Cheapie air compressor (which I already had) and a 50ft air hose and I can get to where I need without problem. It makes life a WHOLE lot easier, and since I do my grease work before I go out for the day, I don’t have the need to grease stuff “in the field”. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I also have the small Lincoln battery powered gun, but it isn’t much use in my opinion. (I’m sure the big one at 8x the price does much better. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) It does work, but it’s very slow and if you got a lot of grease to put out, it will empty before you know it. I’d never put it in a contest under any criteria against the air powered one - well - except for “portability” I suppose. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Trev:

" Irony' from my english poetry class. Have you been making use of this form of prose.

Grease guns are not that difficult to use.

Everyonce in a while the spring loaded handle will slip out of place just as the grease cartridge has been inserted and propell the cartridge contents to some undesireable location.

The worst part is bleeding any air out of the gun. Some have a spring loaded bleed, others a screw bleed that seems to pop out and be impossible to insert when under pressure. This makes a mess and causes blue air.

Sometimes locking in the plunger handle and pressing on it while pumping will get the air out of the system.

Keep a couple around of diferent size with different grease for different applications.

Mastering the "Grease Gun" is well within your capabilities.

Re: types of grease guns.. what\'s easiest?

Bought a $12.99 air powered grease gun (works with my air compressor) at Harbor Freight. Best $12.99 I have spent. After years of using a 2 handed manual grease gun the air powered one is the way to go. I can get into tight areas (like the mower deck under the BX2200) and just press the trigger. Beats trying to hold the gun, hose fitting and pump handle and try to pump in a tight space.
If this new one breaks I will buy another, it really is a work saver.

Re: types of grease guns.. what\'s easiest?

I have a few different types of grease guns. I have a Zee Line penumatic greaser that fits 150 pound open head pails. it has a 20 foot hose on it and it's on wheels. Ibuy my grease in bulk (150 pound pails). I also have an air operated grease gun and a plews type lever gun. The air gun and the lever gun are both set up for bulk loading from the Zee Line bulk greaser. That way, I have a grease gun for outside the shop, a grease gun for in the shop and a bulk greaser for chassis work. Cartridges are messy and sucking grease from a pail is really messy. I believe you can get a Zee Line greaser from Northern Hydraulics for about $375.00. You will only need one in your lifetime so it's really not that much.

Re: types of grease guns.. what\'s easiest?

I just bought the Craftsman Professional air powered model from Sears. After years of using an old lever gun and getting more grease on myself than in the fittings, using that gun is just like Downtown Satrurday Night.

It works great so far. Dave...

Re: types of grease guns.. what\'s easiest?

I just purchased an air grease gun from Harbor Freight for $17.99 and it works great. I can attach the flex tip to any jerk fitting and with a squeeze of the trigger lubricate very easily. Try one and you won't go back to the old pumps! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: types of grease guns.. what\'s easiest?

Some thoughts and tips... I've worn out 2 of the el-cheap-o air powered guns. They're good but require the same frequent cartridge changing as the hand style. To eliminate the air bleed problem, 2 answers. When you install the new grease tube/cartridge, take extra grease from old tube or pail and fill to rim. For the second, follow the above advice and install a zerk and refill with pneumatic if available. The 2 handed grease guns are a joke. Throw 'em out. I still very frequently use the pistol type "squeeze" gun. It's great and ya don't have to drag the air hose around in confined areas PS, Those latex gloves are worth the $ when changing tubes and expecially when topping off the grease before reassembly. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
