Two speed PTO?

Finally able to post again. Been running brush hog hard last few weeks and almost have lot cleared. Two quick questions....It seems my Jinma 284 was advertised as having two speeds on PTO. If this is true, how do I change speeds and which do I use for brush hogging? Second, it seems I read somewhere not to brush hog in 4x4 mode. Is that true and why? Do you just use 4x4 to get out of trouble like the locking diff? Thanks again all.

When you are setting in the seat, if you reach down and back behind the seat with your right hand, you will see a lever that has a 540-1000 label on it's handle. Most impliments for this size tractor are configured for a 540 RPM setting. You of course get that 540 PTO rpm with the engine RPM in the narrow green arc on the tach.

As for using 4X4 while brushhogging, like anything else, I would say it depends upon your traction needs.

My dealer told me not to use 4WD anytime on a hard surface (pavement), if the wheels can slip as in soft dirt, it is OK to use 4WD. If I forget to remove the tractor from 4WD, it will leave skid marks on pavement when turning the front wheels. Also, I have no idea what the 1000 rpm is used for, my finish mower is 540 rpm.

I was told 1000+ RPM settings on a PTO are used for pumps and generators.

I think you may have confused that with someone's advice not to use 4wd with a front end loader.

I don't know of any mainstream rotary cutters (bush hogs) that are designed to operate efficiently at anything other than at a PTO speed of 540 rpm
