Twin Calves

We've got a freemartin... She even looks like a bull and is laid back. Just sits back and watches the world go by.

So far, we have had 3 calves in 2 weeks. 2 are fine, but the 3rd and first born has trouble. She can't walk. Something is up with her hind legs. She can move them and has quite a kick with either, but she can't walk without help from someone balancing her. She tries to move both back legs at the same time, so she is bunny hopping.

I know the 2 weeks of time when a calf is most likely to get better is pretty much past, but we are going to see about making a sling to hold her in and set up something to hang her off of to take some weight off and keep her upright for a few hours a day. Wrestling a 70 pound calf gets tiring after a few minutes. She is a curious sweet and gentle little thing so we are going to try our best to give it every chance to get better.

Can calves dislocate their hips during delivery?

Both sets of twins are doing great. It took a lot of work on my part to get them up and running. I kept them penned in the corral for 2 weeks to keep them together until the calves could keep up with the mother. Lots of feed, water and hay! Then I moved them to a small pasture behind the house for another 2 weeks before turning them out with the herd.

If you haven't already done it, I'd check with a vet about your calf. Like DocHeb said, it could be a dislocated hip.
