They were back this morning, and this time there were two toms with them. They are pretty obvious as they are much bigger. Also, the two toms must have felt pretty good amongst all those hens, as they were strutting around big time. Shortly after I had to leave the house, and you are sure right-on about the way they scatter. The woods and sky were full of fleeing turkeys. I am amazed at how quickly these big birds can get airborne, and how skillfully they manage to get through the trees without tearing themselves apart.

My friend caught a couple bears on his camtrakker, they must have enjoyed the flash from the camera as they just started playing in front of it. We do not have many bears around here and any that are around here usually live in the hills by the state land. Was nice seeing pics of them though. We were out driving the other day and there was a flock of 75 turkeys lined up single file across the cornfield. I didn't have my camera with me and was amazing to see that many single file like they were. We do have a lot of turkeys around here and have quite a few flocks of 30-40 birds in each. Usually 6-8 toms per flock, then they scatter when spring gets here making it harder to find them.

If you want some good pictures of bears, have your friend place several sticks beechnut gum about 12 to 18 feet in a tree.
Than one can see how sly and smart a bear really can be.

I have a couple friends then went on a hunt in Canada and when they get anything the hang them in a tree on a rope so they can pull it up out of the bears reach. The bears figured out how to knock the rope down and ate their loot. They were also telling me how nice it was to be sleeping in their tents and having all sorts of bears walking around right next to their tent. When I go I am going to find an outfitter with cabins./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

They had their pistols close by, I think they were probally in their hands so I don't know quite how brave they really are. I think it would definitly raise the hairs on the back of my neck if I was in their tent and don't think I would have got much sleep.

We hunt bear in Northern Pa, and a friend of mine used to say he wanted a bear to charge him. Well during the local sportsman's club's annual coyote hunt this year, we were set up in a hollow and turned the caller on. We were facing in opposite directions watching for a coyote to come. After about 5 minutes of calling my friend yells and starts shooting. It seems the coyote ignored the decoy and came straight for the caller. My friend said he looked down to grab his shotgun and when he looked back up the coyote was about 5 ft and closing. He yelled and started shooting but was so excited he missed. His yell starteled me so I didn't even get a shot off. After the confusion settled down I asked him if he still wantted a bear to charge him and he said "H@&& NO!!" I guess the coyote cured him of such silly thoughts.

On our 18 acres, I have counted as many as 47 turkeys in one group. They like hanging aound the oak trees and the cedars. Oak trees I can figure out..the cedars??? The only thing I can think of is they are eating the ticks that fall out of the cedar trees. An old lady owns a huge barn next door to me. She has about 30 chickens that run around in her yard, and then they come through the fence and come up by my back steps. About 3 wild turkeys have become semi domesticated and run with the chickens. I have been on my JD 790 and have driven within 10 feet of those big FAT turkeys!!! Oh, the things you see when you don't have your gun!!

beenthere,

We've had a number of turkeys come once in while onto our property - once in a great while.

A hunter told me last fall that the NY turkey population is so large now that NY state has been reintroducing some kind of cat to trim the populations.
