Hi everyone.
Have a new project for the Beave. The front loader and backhoe were not enough. GOT TO HAVE MORE POWER!!! I'm in the process of installing a very small turbo on my mid 80's Satoh Beaver with a two cylinder diesel on it. So far I have most of the components installed... and I have run it. But now its time to start working out all the kinks. Like vacuum at idle and air pulsing out the turbo at high work load RPM's.. If you have any input I would love to here it.

Rip.

Give us more details!!

Sounds interesting! :)

Do you have a picture bigger than a postage stamp? ;)

I'm anxious to see how it works out for you. I started to do the same thing with my TC24DA. However with the divorce in progress (yep I got the tractor) things have been on hold for a while.

Well I tried to put a bigger picture on but it wouldn't let me... I'm a ****** when it comes to the picture stuff. Im a hardware man. I will see what I can do to make it bigger. I have pulled it back apart because of a seal going bad on the compressor side of the turbo. I will take some more pics of it apart. I did run it up the road when it was mostly together. You know you have to test it before you put it all together. It was great... up the hill in 3rd gear only needing 4 lbs of boost... NO SMOKE. It wasn't even grunting. Let me work on those pics.

Now that is cool. I have a G650 Satoh, wish there were more around.

Ok ...
I couldn't wait for my new center section to get here so I decided to go ahead and finish the plumbing. Everything is thin wall stainless. It't tight but it fits in nicely. I left room for an intercooler that is being built for me. Undo two hose clamps and the new cooler will slip right in. Im plumbed right back into the tractors air filter system. I didn't notice any decrease in boost with it attached so I hooked it up. The last pictures show it with header wrap around the manifold and turbo. I know it's ugly on the turbo.. but I needed the heat control and the the insulation to keep the heat in the turbo. I worked it a little bit on saturday.... It hardly grunts at all. A little puff of black smoke, you here the turbo kick in and there you go. Boost was running about 4 psi at just a little bit over half throttle under load. I'm way happy with the way it turned out so far. Just wish my new center section was here. I hope the pictures are bigger this time. Let me know what you think.

How do you control your turbo boost pressure with out a operating waste gate?
I saw that the waste gate is fix!
By the way it is a nice set-up.

Great photos, couple of suggestions though. Exhaust manifold runner lengths are VERY uneven. One of the cylinders looks like it is only a few inches from the turbo, the other is up to a foot or so. This is not an ideal setup. Your exhaust pulses could be canceling eachother out, hurting performance.

Ideally, each runner would be the same length.

In an ideal world the turbo would be perfectly vertical. From the photos it looks like the turbo (oil inlet and outlet) is tilted. IE the oil intake and outlet are a few degrees from vertical. Most turbo mfg's will have tolerances their turbos can take. I looks like yours is quit large. Oil could "puddle" in the center section and cause seals to leak. It hard to tell from photos.

When I was looking for a turbo for my Yanmar I spoke with several dealers and all of them tried to push me to a Garret GT12. Its the smallest garret makes and was TOOOO big for my 1.3 L diesel. KKK and MHI are the only MFG's that make small turbos for our diesels. Just look at kubotas and bobcats they mostly have MHI's.

Keep us posted on results...

I decided not to allow the turbo to control the boost because I have not been able to push it over 8 psi. And the was only for a split second. It normally runs between 2 psi and 6 psi. So a waste gate really does me no good.

As far as the tube length of the header... I wish I had the room to make them equal... but room is something that the tractor is way shy of I made the short tube quiet a bit larger in pipe diameter. 1.5" and the cross over tube is a little over 1" yes equal length would have been optimum. My thinking is. on the two cylinder motor, your exhaust valve is always closed on one port while the other is exhausting. So there is no where for the exhaust to go but through the turbo. I may be wrong. A three cylinder might have some problem because the exhaust valve opening of one cylinder might be on the heals of another cylinder opening for exhaust. thus the exhaust being able to back up into the other cylinder. Again I may be wrong, but its what my thinking was at the time. This is still an R&D project so things could still change some.

The oil inlet and out let left me little choice I had to put it at a slight angle. I ported the outlet and added some more room in the cartridges to help the oil flow out and not pool in the bottom. I am still 5 deg away from having it perfect. another thing I might have to live with. All in all... the turbo is running great at high speeds. I have a new cartridge coming we will get it in and see if the turbine spins any better.
