pulled my down position handle this afternoon and the wedge, wedged in a log. When I pushed the handle up nothing happened. The wedge is in the down position and will not respond to up or down handle motion, any suggestions ?

Sounds like your hydraulics are stalled, maxed out. Can you use a chainsaw or other saw to cut the stuck piece shorter? Between the wedge and the stop.

Like Dave1949 indicated. Free the splitter from the stuck log and cycle it 2 or 3 times. That should return things to normal.

the splitter is free. it is stuck in the down position.

OK Try this. Its possible that your hydraulic valve is stuck. Try tapping - gently - on the valve with the handle of a screw driver. This might break it loose.

Check the coupling between the engine and pump. It's a common problem.

where is the coupling

Looks like a vertical shaft engine, so the coupling would be below the motor where the engine shaft is.

is there a diagnostic test to do ?

Shooting in the dark here. :) There is probably a key or clamp on the motor shaft that connects it to the pump shaft. Look for any sign of slipping at that point. You may need to remove the pump from the motor shaft to see what's what. If that looks good, I would suspect the valve is stuck.

Thanks Dave. The "love-joy" is broken, piece that connects the motor shaft to the hydro box. TSC is going to try to order the part for me.If this is how you shoot in the Dark, you must rely be good in the Daylight. :)

You'll have to thank triptester for the diagnosis. I just helped you find the right spot to look in for his excellent call. :D

Glad you are on your way to the fix. Winter is coming.

No rubber/neoprene shock absorber between the two halves of the lovejoy? It would be round--with three wedge-shaped "ears" that fit between the metal parts that are sheared off.

I will have to look on the ground for that. It would of had to break in 2 pieces because of the shaft. Maybe that is why it broke. TSC has to order the part as the manufacture has changed it.

Lovejoy couplings are normally stock off the shelf items. The two haves one to match each shaft diameter and the rubber spider that goes between them. They come in different sizes I prefer the bigger size, I believe they are the L-100 series. Just make sure they fit inside the engine to pump adapter.

the one TSC thought would fit did not have any rubber either. Just the metal with 2 different shaft sizes.

Well ... That don't seem right. That's no different functionally than a piece of round stock with a different size hole at each end and two set screws. I don't have any log splitter experience so I just don't know.

Here is what you should have to be a complete lovejoy coupling.untitled.png
