Were they hurt on the job. LOL

Yes they were hurt on the job. The Shop Foreman told me I was using too much toilet paper and needed to cut back. Profit margins were slim. I am still not over that traumatic event :) Ken Sweet

I have to agree, but also disagree here. To me, someone that draws UI and doesn't seek to find a job is equivalent to someone injured on the job going out and intentionally doing things to agrevate the injury for the purpose of extending the claim. The latter in this case could be sued by the state for repayment of the claim.

Or someone who has their car hit in a parking lot trying to have the insurance company buy them a new vehicle rather than repair it. After all, they've been paying for it. Right?

There's a difference between drawing UI while looking for another job and nursing it to try to keep from having to work for as long as possible. UI is insurance, not a vacation fund.

Another option for UI would be to have it be on a declining scale. The longer you're off work, the lower your benefits become until they eventually expire.:confused3: This would help people to get through, but encourage them not to try to draw it out as it would become harder and harder to live off of, encouraging people to try to go back to work.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree 100%. I have collected UI maybe 15 weeks in my lifetime. A few years ago I quit a job to care for an aging parent. Had I stayed and got layed off I could of been one of the 99'ers in less than 6 months as the company folded 10 months after my departure. I am not sorry for my decision. I like your plan of decreasing payments as UI is a great program if not abused, and this is what the thread is about.......

I've just come across this thread and i didn't read everything so if someone else has brought this up sorry.
there are business who are hiring these UI workers and Paying Cash. . . but they are also planing to 1099 them at the end of the year. So i think the Gov. will be demanding refunds from a few people who were claiming benefits. I know one contractor who has been doing this for years. He loves it and says its his way of teaching a freeloader a lesson as he pays them min wage in cash (and no one would do construction for less "on the books" for min wage) they think they are making their UI and the cash but at the end of the year he sends out the 1099 and smiles doing it. He had cheep labor and got a dead beat of UI.
I wish i had the balls to do something like that but i'd be worried about them comming back and vandalizing my business.

Gerard, do you or do you plan on drawing social security?

Actually no I don't. Even though I paid into it my whole life, I'm pretty sure there will at least be a means test by the time I'm eligible and I won't get any or it will be greatly reduced. I've also lived my life in such a way that without ss I'll be fine. I actually ran my whole life planning on depending on ME, not the government. I also would have waived taking any ss in a heartbeat in exchange for the 12.4% of wages they collected off me my whole life.

And BTW - someone who gets legitimately injured and collects workers comp is fine. Thats what it's for. My reference to UI was for able bodied people who make a conscious decision not to accept a lower paying job cause they can sit on their duffs for almost the same $. THATS an abuse of the system and just sucking off the government teat at the expense of the rest of us. Don't delude yourself by thinking these things don't cost us all. It's all factored into the cost of doing business, is passed along to us all, and makes us globally less competitive BECAUSE other countries aren't saddled with the same costs.

I could see a few problems doing it this way... you would need to have a valid SS# and it is very difficult to 1099 an individual here as an independent contractor...

A local business found out the hard way what kind of trouble they got into not with holding.

That aside... I like the idea.

Well I just read this whole thread and I agree with most of it. It's easy to pick out the people that are small business minded and those that are entitled employees.

But the one thing I see that was not mentioned here is that I am the problem. I go to work pay my taxes buy goods and services, while my government, drives my country into the ground. Folks we are the people that fuel this great machine we call the USA. We borrow too much, we expect too much, and we try to make sure that there is no one left behind. The rest of the world has what they can afford, doesn't expect to be saved and it's dog eat dog. I make 20% less this year than I did at the same job, different company 2 years ago. Layoff. Is it fair, yes it's economics. I work in the oil and gas industry, and I'm sure no one is gonna step up to pay 20% more for gas so I can keep my salary. If I didn't do it for 20% less someone else will. Lucky for me the oil can't be moved to China until I get it out of the ground. Our economy is getting closer and closer to global. If you won't do something for $10/hr someone in this world is hungry enough to, and either they will sneak over here or the jobs will go there. I get tired of people saying the rich are getting richer and the working mans getting beat up. I've never worked for a poor person, except myself! I'm not an economist nor do, I have the answers, but I have done nothing to change it, so I am the problem. I honestly think every problem can be solved by taking responsibility for OUR country although I don't think it will because all the IIIII's like me are too busy working.

I agree... especially the part about most of us are so busy taking care of our responsibilities... no one is minding the store.

And he somehow has their SS number? What about the workers comp insurance. did he have that provided the whole time?I would think the IRS would be happy that he want witholding or offering to.They might even have not had the required 'breaks'. .Anyways seem slike this could come back to bite him. Unless he has an agreement that they are sub contractors.

Subs are a gray area. The first few years I worked as a consultant I carried a comp policy on myself as a part of doing business. In theory I passed that on to my clients but it never really worked that way. The insurance companies always found ways to increase my bill after the fact.

Paying under the table may sound good, but it can bite you in the tail when someone gets hurt.

I've been laid off dozens of times over the last 30 years and have collected a total of 2 1/2 weeks. However, I also didn't have a family to support & sometimes took jobs just to survive.
