Technically yes. However, the only way to have a Class A is 1. have a K restriction which restricts your CDL to your home State or 2. have a medical card. If you have a K on your license, then it would be up to the current State you are in if they want to honor your A for a private vehicle. Also, if your Stated requires a Class A or B for the vehicle you are driving or a special endorsement then you would be operating out of Class depending again on the State you are currently in. Clear as mud?
Kind of I think they need a book called "CDL laws for dummies" lol

I just sent my email off.
It is ironic as a farmer i can pull 38000lb of hay, cattle, or farm equipment, but as a plumber i cant pull 26001 to dig up a sewer.
How am i a safer driver when pulling for farm?
Farmers have a better Lobbiest than plumbers.

Nope. You are definitely wrong on this one.
Now whether a nanny state chooses to enforce the commercial regulations on non-commercial drivers is totally up to them and within their rights.

Please have a read Hours of Service: Frequently Asked Questions- Non-Business Transportation of Personal Property –ELD, CDL | FMCSA

But this just further proves the point of how complicated CDL laws are and who should be licensed and who shouldnt.
Explain how it is for power and money? USDOT#s are free. The Feds do not get any portion of the fine money. States aren't writing the number of tickets they use to due to changes in the Federal Law. The majority of the regulations come from the CVSA conferences which is made up from both industry and enforcement and they are the ones that petition the feds to change the laws. (This is for Federal Transportation Laws not State Laws)

What is a special license?

Broadly speaking, there are two types of special licenses: a commercial and non-commercial license. Some states require you to have a non-commercial special license in order to drive a recreational or personal vehicle over a certain length or weight. Other states will require you to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) — the kind of license needed for large and heavy vehicles likes buses or tractor trailers.

States That Require A Commercial Driver’s License

  • Arkansas: CDL required for vehicle over 26,000 lb
  • Connecticut: CDL (Class B) required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; CDL (Class A) required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • Hawaii: CDL (Class B) required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; CDL (Class A) required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • Kansas: CDL (Class B) required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; CDL (Class A) required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • New Mexico: CDL (Class B) required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; CDL (Class A) required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • Washington, D.C.: CDL (Class B) required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; CDL (Class A) required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • Wisconsin: CDL required over 45 feet
States That Require A Non-Commercial Special Driver’s License

  • California: Class B license required over 26,000 lb or over 40 feet; Class A license required for towing over 10,000 lbs
  • Maryland: Class B license required over 26,000 lb
  • Michigan: Recreational Double “R” Endorsement required to tow a fifth wheel plus a trailer (it’s unlikely that you’ll ever need this)
  • North Carolina: Class B license required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; Class A license required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • Nevada: Class B license required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; Class A license required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb; “J” Endorsement required to tow a vehicle over 10,000 lb (if the combined weight is less than 26,000 lb)
  • New York: Personal Use Vehicle or “R” endorsement required for vehicles over 26,000 lb
  • Pennsylvania: Class B license required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; equired for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • South Carolina: Class E license required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; Class F license required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • Texas: Class B license required for single vehicle over 26,000 lb; Class A license required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lb
  • Wyoming: Class B license required for vehicle over 26,000 lb and towing under 10,000 lb; Class A license required for vehicle over 26,000 lb and towing over 10,000 lb

In formative, easy to follow, but I already pretty much understand that and know certain states have different laws how it all comingles with federal and other states is confusing for me anyway especially when your no longer driving commercially, have a valid class A with farm endorsement minus the med card. So if I drive across state lines, or out of radius intrastate with farm endorsement 26k+ non commercially would I get the book thrown at me probably, I also understand if I don't renew my class A I'll probably never bother to or qualify medically to get it back. So all endorsements, experience, and training I received to get it would be for nothing for me anyway maybe just funny fodder for others. Anyways I've had it for 20 yrs last job I had with it was working for a county in WI plowing where for some reason state law didn't require dot physical for municipalities in intrastate use as said earlier from what I've studied and read up on I can't legally work intrastate or even get a valid chauffer lic in MI without getting fed med card, but can legally keep farm endorsement with out it. Apologies for drift.

I dont think anyone is arguing the differing weights and what class CDL is required.

The argument is requiring a CDL for a NON-commercial application. This is where the debate always is.

A hot-shot trucker with a F450 and a 24k GN trailer....no question from anyone that it requires a CDL-A

A average Joe with a dually and a 14k trailer that wants to transport his personal tractor or skidloader......CDL or no CDL is the debate. And it has been debated for decades, and even to this day there is no clear and decisive answer. Otherwise we wouldnt still be debating it. And grab 10 different LEO's.....and you are likely to get 12 different answers

I posted what I found about 6 years ago when a friend of mine retired and bought an RV. He had to take a road test and get an endorsement on his license to drive it. The list I posted shows what States need what to drive a vehicle over 26k. Just remember that list is at least 6 years old. Not sure if any States were added since then. (See# 325)

I understand your point and other folks with similar pov.
I feel what some folks say or think they can safely do and what they actually do or what happens are usually different in my experiences.
