a cultivator is used for after u plant ur crops u use it to keep the ground inbetween the rows loose so the grass wont take over the plants and a tiller is used to prepare the ground before u plant ur plants u can use a walk behind tiller to cultivate with but a tractor tiller would be to wide to fit between the rows and if u take the shovels of a cultivator u can use it only after u dics u use it the break the soil below where u disc to make it where water will raise to the plants when its dry and will go done when its raining so it wont flood the plants and when u do this the cultivator would be call a chisle plow

When I take the shovels off my cultivator, I can dig it down a foot, in raw ground, it will pull all the roots and big rocks out of the ground. It might not be made for that but it works really good. I should get a single tooth ripper, as my cultivator is a little small for my tractor.

yes that is a cultivator it is a regid shank cultivator i believe they work the best

Looks kinda like the scarrafiers on a box blade without the box.

To upload pictures, There is a symbol of a paper clip at the top of the dialog box when you are typing your post. Click on it and it will open a window which will allow you to browse for your pictures. After selecting your pictures (4 at a time), click the upload button and then either select up to 4 more or close the window.

Just got back in town.... Troybilt calls their small tiller a cultivator. It's like the Mantis advertised on tv. It's small enough to get between plants for weeding. I just never ran it more than a few minutes to get it hot the first few years. When I did, the gaskets blew. Of course, out of warranty....

Glad to see you back. Hope you didn't mind my borrowing your thread while you were gone. I've actually learned quite a bit.

I've seen the ads for the mantis and thought about getting something like that for after the garden is planted. My tiller/cultivator is too big to use after you've planted (see pic). How do you like yours for between the plants?

Our cultivator is the Troybilt TB144. It sells for around
$299.00 now. We paid $100 less at Tractor Supply without the attachments or manuals. It seems to run ok now that I have the cam timing correct. Gets in tight to the plants without chewing up the tops or roots. Good for loosening the soil for potato hilling. Also have a Troybilt economy 6 hp tiller (circa 1973), that works great, but tears up the plants if I get too close.
