Troublesome PTO?

Hi There,
I have a mid mounted mower on my JD2305 The PTO coupling is proving tricky this time. I have got this thing on and off successfully heaps of times but this time the spring release wont quite release enough for it to start sliding off the tractor snub. I may have been running out of time and grease when I put it together and now it seems to have a bit too much sand in with the bearings. I have been squirting CRC and some anti freeze which hasn't done any harm and has freed things up but still no release.
Any advice would be great......
