European Cartridge designations are mostly descriptive of the measurements of the cartridge. Example 7X57 means 7mm bullet diameter and cartridge case length of 57 millimeter.

What does the 06 mean in the American cartridge 30-06 ?
What does the 70 mean in the American cartridge 45-70 ? What does the 45 mean? Ocassionally the cartridge was called the 45-70-405 what does the 405 mean?

06 = year of development.
70 = grains of black powder
45 = bore size
405 = overall cartridge length. I think??

What was the first cartridge to be converted from black powder to smokeless??

Today we have rim fire & center fire. There was another self contained cartridge percussion type. What was it??

WW2 Sherman tank had what type of engine???

What was the first cartridge to be converted from black powder to smokeless?? I would say 8MM Lebel (french army) The french invented smokeless powder with their "Pourdre Blanche." translated in english to powder white or white powder instead of black powder. I think about 1884

Today we have rim fire & center fire. There was another self contained cartridge percussion type. What was it?? Are you talking about the old "pin fire" cartridges?

WW2 Sherman tank had what type of engine??? Gasoline powered Radial aircraft type

Yep 9 cylinder Air Craft engine that ran on Gasoline.

The tank had a nick name. What was it & why? The Germans called them "Ronsons" or "Tommy Cookers" Because when hit by German shells they often burst into flames and "cooked all within"

how did "Tanks" get named "Tank"???
They were developed in secret by the British, and the curious were told that the tank hulls they were building were "water tanks". The secret was kept, because when they were first deployed against the Germans, it caught them completely by surprise.

There was a rifle with a revolving cylinder. What happened to that "fine" fire arm??
See 1 in old westerns now & then.
Colt revolving carbine, Civil war era thing. Not a good idea to have a revolver cylinder up near your face, what with cylinder gap, and percussion cap pieces flying off into your eyes.. They were not a particularly good idea.

those are my answers and I am sticking to em:laughing:

They were not a good idea for another reason; the black powder revolvers had a nasty habit of flashing over from one cylinder to the other, and sometimes several cylinders would fire at the same time; the result is you could end up shooting your own arm off.
