Planted a tree to commemorate my daughter's Christening and had no problem getting the hole 2 1/2 times the diameter of the root ball! ( Hey I don't have a backhoe! ) /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It could just be an illusion, but it appears that the tree is planted 4" or so below the natural ground level. If you are going to backfill up to the ground level, your tree is going to suffer from being planted to low.

As the saying goes, "Plant it low and it won't grow; plant it high and it won’t die."

The top of the root ball is aprox 8" below ground level on the high side of the slope. I plan on adding a couple of inches of mulch to it this weekend. Is that still too shallow?

Gatorboy is right, tree is too deep if you were going to restore the original grade
If you dont and your soil is clay you might drown your tree and your 2in of mulch might float away.

I would set the top of the root ball at the same level as the high side, which will then be slightly above on the low side after you backfill. You can always add mulch, etc. to the lowside -- as you have it now, you are going to be burying the top of the rootball, which is not what you want to do.

I was thinking the same thing. Bad for the crown if any more dirt goes in there. It's going to settle down some as well even as it is. John
