Trator Batteries

Is there any difference between batteries made for tractors vs. the ones made for cars? The ones Walmart sells are highly rated and cost a lot less but they are not "tractor" batteries. My tractor dealer told me that the ones he sells will withstand a lot more bumps and rough service. What about maintenance free vs. the ones you must add distilled water to? My original battery is the maintenance free type. Thanks for any help.

I replaced my tractor battery with one I bought at Advance Auto. I'm sure a Walmart car battery will work for you as well. Just don't go with a smaller size or CCA capacity than your original. I went by the largest battery I could find that physically fit in the space I had plus was able to get one rated for higher CCA (cold cranking amps). I think your dealer is giving you a line about tractor batteries withstanding more bumps and rough service. My truck sees much rougher service and bumps than my tractor does any day. You can replace with a maintenance free battery or one you add to. The choice is yours.

I agree. I replaced mine with the largest Wal Mart had to offer, just don't go smaller/
Now mine is garaged but its been 6 years now with no problems spins as fast as the stock one did.

As long as the CCA and the terminal location are correct you should have no problem.

I think the tractor batteries have a thicker case on them to better withstand the bumps. As far as Wal-Mart batteries go, in my experience they are very good. I had one in my lawn/garden tractor that lasted for six years. This is exceptional for this type of battery. I also have a Wal-Mart deep cycle battery on my boat and it works very well.

From my experience, I've found that tractor batteries last almost twice as long as batteries for road use. I don't know why but my guess is they are built to withstand the bumpy conditions found in the fields and as the cells flake off they have a deeper well to fall into before they short out between 2 cells.

Battery life is determined by a several factors, but one is the number of "starting" or high load cycles that are placed on it.
