Check out Cub Lo Boys. 154/184. They have exactly what you're describing.
An OPEN DRIVESHAFT with supporting bearings, NOT A TORQUE TUBE, attaches to back of flywheel and runs back to the clutch that's mounted in front of the transmission/rear axle case.
Here's a link to photo's of one disassembled, but it's hard to understand without actually seeing one and I can't find a schematic of it.

i was refering to using a long shaft and a torque tube.. not specifically an open unshielded driveline.

My dad had a '63 Tempest ... from Wikipedia:
The 1961-1963 Pontiac Tempest incorporated an unusual curved 鍍orque-tube with a 4-inch drop (about 10 centimeters) that housed a 3/4 inch (2 cm) solid steel driveshaft (nicknamed the "rope shaft") without universal joints on each end. The main purpose was to make the floor lower, thus increasing the car's interior room.
He loved that car.
