Probably, hard to say without knowing the actual temperature. One thing that's been discussed before is that it's normal for the oil to reach temperatures of 100 F over the ambient temperature. Now that will definitely be hotter than you could hold your hand on unless it's pretty cold winter time. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I once discussed this with a dealer who said they never measure the temperature; if it doesn't discolor the paint, it's OK. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I don't think I'd go quite that far, but hot to the touch is normal. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Lippy, why dont you try a different brand of oil
like case brand (hytran), or a high quality one.
I had that problem & it cured it, be sure to clean your filter in between oil changes too.

Well... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I was cutting last week... and after about 4 hours... I bet I could have almost fryed some eggs on the transmission cast iron housing... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So to answer your question... Yeah it's probably normal... unless it's turning "molten red" or something with steam coming out... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think all gear boxes and trans get hot when using hydralics, engine heat, clutch heat and the general stresses in engine and drive train the heat saturates the tractor I've used my tractor for 2-3hrs i'd quess trans temps run ~160 or so? I'll break out the IR temp gun next time i mow in about 2 weeks and see what it reads..
