I confess ignorance here. Can/should I use dextron III when the owners manual says use dextron? I'm talking about a '68 plymouth satellite [I got it running again] - - I don't think dextron III existed then, but I've got some on hand & the car needs fluid. Should I look for plain old dextron?

I would think the dextron III is backwards compatible with the earlier formulation. I just had the tranny of my 2003 Impala flushed and they wanted to use dextron VI, but that was much more expensive than the dextron III that had been in it, so I told them to use the III. I'd bet the older formulations just disappear over time because you can use the new ones.

Jack...I'd call Summit Racing and see if they have some B&M compatible fluid for that vintage of vehicle...Would hate to see you burn a tranny for an extra few bucks. That's what I started doing with my '70 Chevelle when Dextron II tuned into Dextron XXVII.
