Ok so I have my MX5100 with HST but I am looking at upgrading to a (6040 can't find yet_) 7040SUH. The 7040 has the 8x8 but I'm not entirely sure how this works. The dealer said you don't pick up any more speed going to a 12x12 necessarily but more power in the trans. So can I get so more explaining on how this all works?
Im looking for review and options on the SUH vs SUHD too, but I can start another thread on that too if I need. Or just message me.

Interesting - I can't really tell what gearbox they come with, from the literature on their site.
Some of the description sounds like the L Series' FST, and some sounds like the L Series' GST?

FST or Fully Sycronized Transmission. You have to stop to shift between low and high range. GST or Glide Shift Transmission. No stopping. More expensive. A 12x12 isn't more powerful than a 8x8, it just gives you more gears which gives you more options. Again, more expensive. Sometimes you need to be in between gears on a 8x8, but there isn't one. But the 12x12 might have it. Like a dump truck with a 18 speed. :)

The 7040HD-1 (not SU) hydro shuttle 8x8 works like this:

To change ranges, tractor must be stopped, shuttle lever in N.

To pick a direction, move shuttle lever either F or R while in gear, clutch not necessary, but can be used. (clutch is good for a smooth start in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th). I don't use it much (the clutch) for 1st, 2nd and 3rd unless I need control.

While in gear and moving or not, with shuttle lever in F or R, depress foot clutch and shift gears using gear shift lever (just like a manual trans car).

The same tractor equiped with a dry clutch (instead of multi-plate wet disc hydro shuttle) like a 7040SU, the clutch must be used when throwing the shuttle lever. No big deal.

I know the manual says if the 7040 HD-1 is equipped with a 3 range trans, heavy ground engaging like plowing is not to be used in the lowest range (pic of a snail). The three range trans pictographs are snail, turtle, and rabbit.

That is why I did not bother with adding the extra range. I don't need it, and for I do with it, I can't foresee a need for it. I know there is a need for it, otherwise Kubota wouldn't build one.

See if you can download an owners/operators manual for whatever tractor you are seriously considering. Always double check what the dealer feeds you. Not saying your dealer is out to get you, but the kubota line-up is extremely diversified. Can't be an expert at 'em all! Knowledge is power...
