I changed the trans oil in my Jinma 204 over the weekend. I was going to use 80/90 gear oil but TSC didn't have 5 gal containers. Instead I used 85/140 gear oil. Seems fine but I don't recall anyone commenting on it before. Any thoughts? Tractor has 450 hours and is 4 yrs old.

I use 85W140 in my tractors, and straight 140W in implement transmissions. But that's because I don't like how thin 80W90 gets here in July/August. And our winters are surely nothing like what you experience up there.

So I say try it, but be prepared for possibly extended warm-up times next winter. But if you park the tractor for the winter, I'd say it's a non-issue.

Yes, it does have a creeper box. I took the advise of this board and lifted the cover to be sure it was filling. It was empty after I drained it and I filled it. The thicker oil probably would have made it through the bearing but I didn't want to take the chance. I also changed the front axle fluid as well. It took a very long time to fill. Oil was so thick it will take some time to get out to the ends of the diff. I removed the drains a little to check if some lube made it there. It did. I might decide to change back to 80/90 in the fall.
