Tractors are getting more costly every year

My Father and I used to go deer hunting together a lot. He would use the time driving there as a time to teach me things about this world.
One of the things he told me was to work like a mule while I was young, because getting old and broke was the chitz!
He owned a manufacturing plant since after ww2, and he earned every penny he had the hard way.
He's gone to be with the Lord, but if he knew what things cost now days, he would roll over in his grave.
Glad I listened..

1956 dad bought a new JD 70 diesel (about 50 hp) , hitch and 3 bottom plow for $3900.
1967 I started working for $2.35 about $100 a week and after filling the gas tank for a few dollars I had plenty left over.
1972 A new MF 760 diesel, a/c, 14 foot grain table and 6 row corn head $39,000.
1987 A new MF 860 diesel, a/c, 15 foot grain table and 6 row corn head $120,000.
1965 MF 35 listed for $2529.
1975 MF 135 listed for $4385.
1983 MF 245 listed for $17150.
These Massey's are about the same hp as the 70 above.
About five years ago I bought a 245 for $850. Oh yeah it had a bad engine the needed a total rebuild. So in the end I had about $4000 in it. Then purchased a 232 loader for $2500.

I'm not really concerned for the rest of my llife, yeah I am retired from a medical issue, but I hate to think of my grandchildren. What will they have to pay for that fast food hamburger $100? or a new car $250.000? Probably they won't even be able to afford a tent! But by then jobs (if there are any/enough) will probably be paying $500 an hour or more.

And if you remember in the 60's VW. Toyota, Datsun and others started importing cars because they were cheaper and got better mileage, and people bought them instead of US made cars.

When i as in the Army in 1971 there was an article published that stated the US would be in trouble if a war started and it went onn to explain how uniforms, helmits, boots, and just about all asolldier needs to fight was made in other countries and imported to the states.

And here we are and our government took us down that road on the rails of greed.

LOL... I got my propery taxes down by fighting like hell.
I managed to do that during COVID. I did it by carefully documenting comparable properties' assessments relative to their recent sales. REALTORS (educated REALTORS, that is.) can be helpful as they've access to software designed to create lists of comparable properties and adjust for differences in relevant features. Usually to persuade a SELLER to list at a price the market might bear.

However since they have access to the assessed values before the sale date, a list of comparable properties that have recently sold showing the actual SALES PRICE along with it's prior ASSESSED value can help one determine the correlation as between the Assessor's estimates of value as against the demonstrated FAIR MARKET VALUE.

In my case, I was able to demonstrate that the COUNTY had been assessing our properties at as much as 125% of their demonstrated FMV based upon recent sales data.

A few years later, they reassessed me up again - even as the improvements depreciated over time.

It's Chinatown, forget about it.

Yep, and we voted for every ******* man jack in Congress.

It's a ***** living in a democratic republic. Ultimately its all down to us. And, it seems we suck at it somewhat.

Property taxes are designed for gentrification. It's how people control who lives where. We sold our house in SE PA. Taxes were 14k a year.
Moved to Texas. They try the same here but a lot lower out in ranchland. Our taxes now are under 6k which is still alot. Paying for the house addition and the connected 72 x 60 shop since we moved here.

My hot water heater is from Hubermeyer Foundry, Seattle 1949. Still cooking, but if it blows? It probably level my house?

After my Dad passed away a few years ago I was going through the documents he left behind and found the bill of sale for a brand spanking new Ford 861 PowerMaster tractor with snowplow. Only $3475 in September of 1960! I spent many, many hours on that tractor! Great machine - it went with the farm when it sold in the mid-1990s.

12 years later (I was home from Vietnam and had a good Nikon camera by then) I got this shot of my Mom tedding hay on the Ford. It came stock with a low exhaust but I see in this pic my Dad had it converted to a high exhaust. Snow plow frame is still attached to the tractor - that plow was used for more than just snow!

Our local system is heavily graduated by lot size, and depends a lot on zoning (e.g. rural 1 vs. rural 2, town, or commercial). There are also huge breaks for giving up your development rights, for various free-space initiatives.

I have had family members on 100 - 300 acres paying less than I presently pay for 4 acres, and I have at least one friend paying more than my 4 acres for his 0.75 acres. Location, location, location...
