There are a lot of variables when it comes to crotches :) We have a lot of red maple which tends to be crotchy. But they aren't huge and split pretty easy if you split them into two 'Y's first. So I usually bring them home rather than dealing with short logs when making up a hitch to skid out.

With the "right" equipment they aren't too bad at all, so there's NO WAY I leave them behind, there's just too much excellent firewood in them.

To be honest, I really don't mind working them into splits, with the splitter that I have.

For me, it has nothing to do with the splitting. My splitter also goes thru crotches and knots just fine, it doesn't take anything extreme.

But they make for poor stacking, and poor Tetris when trying to stuff your stove to the gills, which is my usual aim. Moreover, when you have more wood than free time to process it, it doesn't make any sense wasting that time on anything less than primo.

Again, YMMV... I'm sure I'd sing a different tune if circumstances were different.

Had to look that up. Don't think I will ever catch up. I'm still working at being a '90's man. But you are so right - different strokes for different folks. It's all good.

That's a nice looking mini ex, I often wish I had one!
Thank you, I’ve wanted one for a long time too, great to have around the property. I’ve put 40hrs. On it since purchase, just a 1 ton machine but it sure beats a shovel.

Money in the bank Don, for the both of you . . . (y)
Thanks. He is 64 (ten years older than I) but he is in very rough shape. Unable to run a saw and use a log splitter. Suffered a bad car accident years ago plus way too much drug and alcohol use in the past. Sued some of his neighbors when he lived in the southern US and had to move to Michigan to get away. He was going to be murdered.

I was a bit reluctant to help him, but no issues in the 12 years I have been here. He is a bit of a goof ball but OK. We tend to help out neighbors around here. My dad used to say, "One hand washes the other".

I am a remote area. He lives 2 miles from me and there are only two full time residents between us.

Good neighbors are not always hard to find!
We’ve been in our house 🏠 in Oregon for ten years now. Our neighbors of 8 years are some of the best people we know! They are both in their 30s with 2 kids
3 dogs and 3 horses!
We are always ready to help each other. I can’t wait for the snow so I can plow his driveway😂IMG_2765.jpeg

Had an old cedar come down in a big wind. Other end was solid.

That's quite a log to pick. Nothing like eastern cedars that I see. What do you do with something like that ?
