I wear cutting pants. For you guys who wear chaps are they better? My pants give good protection but maybe chaps are cooler in warm weather?
I used to have both. I "grew out" of my cutting pants years ago and gave them to my brother. I've been wearing my full wrap chaps ever since. Some modern cutting pants are cooler than wearing chaps over pants (especially full wrap chaps). Of course with chaps, you can take them off or at least unbuckle the legs when you stop for a break (not that I usually bother).

I've been debating buying a pair of Pfanner Gladiator Ventilation pants for warmer weather work. They are expensive, and no one in my area carries them. If I could try some on for size first, I'd probably already own a pair. I'm hoping someone will show up at a trade show with some so I can try them.

Normally see chaps of some sort here either internal or external ones with a set of double knee logger jeans. We don’t see the European style gear out here unless it’s a power line arborist crew that never spent time in the brush. A good set of internals are what most guys wear being you can’t get hung up as easily as the external ones and the few that have tried the pants normally don’t say much about them, or they’re still required to wear a set of chaps either way.

I had pants years ago... they were in my packbasket of work gear which somebody stole. :( The beauty of chaps to me is that in hot weather you can take them off to get cooled down, and it's much easier to put them on when using the saw intermittently; say, to cut a tree out of the road. I have considered pants though, and probably will buy a pair if I ever start using a saw seriously again.

One thing which I DON'T recommend is the removable pads which slip down down into a sleeve in the pants. https://www.labonville.com/shop/lab...w-snaps-sp500kp-49917?category=639#attr=12686
It seems like a good concept; buy a pair of pants for summer and another for winter, and switch the pads back and forth. I didn't like them because the pads didn't always stay in place, and I never felt they'd be there if I messed up.

I good set of internals are hard to beat, they button into the jeans and there’s very few made that actually do this.

I tried on a pair at a logging expo years ago. I can't remember what the brand was. I did not like them at all. They just didn't seem to provide the protection of either my full wrap chaps or the pants I had at the time with the permanently installed chainsaw protection. It felt as though it would be far too easy for the pants to spin on my leg and move the protection out of place. I have never hit any pair of chaps or pants with a running chainsaw, but I just was not comfortable those would do the job if it ever did happen. Maybe I just found a bad brand, or maybe they would work if I actually tried them in the woods. I just was not comfortable experimenting.

That was my experience as well. I wear the black Labonville pants all winter which are designed for the pads and thought they would be a good idea; but they didn't seem to stay where they should.

This is the norm out here even in the wet, wonder if the labonville pants allow more sliding vs jeans.
