I was having a pretty good day bringing out poplar, but my cable was kinking up so with my last hitch I ran it out to the end, thinking that if I dragged the trees for a bit it would straighten the cable a bit. Dumb move and I probably don't need to tell the results... the cable pulled out of the spool and I was done for the day. I haven't decided if I will replace it or just put the old length back in, it depends on how much I have to take apart to replace it.

What happen to the small steel block on cable end to prevent cables pull out?
I was going to buy a spare one few years back til I found out that small block with set screw was $50.00, ouch..........

No, I pulled mine off the spool end. 120 feet of cable is now up in my greenhouse, waiting for this week's storm to pass before I take the winch apart. My garage roof leaks a bit, considering that it's still stacked and stuck on my trailer.

I have a small steel block with set screw on my spool it keeps cable from coming off spool as long as that set screw is tight.

The wire rope on my Wallenstein is very easy to replace and it's held on the drum with a couple bolts, so you can't pull it all out and off it.

Easy to get to too...

Did it come like that, or is it OldPath installed? My old Fransgard had a ferrule to keep it from coming undone. The best way to keep from doing what I did though, is to avoid pulling with the tractor when at the end of the cable. It seems like I may have learned that lesson once before with one of my old winches...
