. I always see poplar in the lumber stores, and wonder why anyone would use it. I guess poplar out west is different than poplar in the east.

Believe the type used in woodworking is Yellow Poplar. It is cheaper than most other hardwoods, tends to have straight grain, cuts and drills well, and can be stained to appear like other more expensive hardwoods.

We used it to make industrial casting patterns.

...and it is very stable for furniture/cabinet making. It is also the "core" wood used on finer veneer'd furniture.

Doesn't have to happen in the woods. I hit a rock in my field. There was a guard. The guard bent and rip the rubber on the tie rod but never bent the tie rod. Very close call.

In their defence tractors weren稚 made to go in the woods. There痴 plenty of other damage points. That being said the front axel tie rods suck.

What percent of efficiency was each fuel burned at and what was the moisture content of the wood?

I no longer burn white birch after seeing a news story last yast fall about some mill in Maine still pays premium price for it, one of their product was tongue depressors, according to them white birch is the only local species that doesn't give off any taste when used. My main source of firewood is beach, white maple, ash, some red oak and yellow birch.

Todays wood gathering started out nice then ended up cloudy, noontime almost had to take my Carharts off, 3pm glad I kept them on. Here's couple pictures of the old snow in the bucket trick, might've added 75 more lbs on front, sometimes dont take much to help keep the front down...........

It looks like you're getting a good start on next year's firewood supply. A lot of people are wishing that they had put more up for this year.

Nice pile of firewood you have pulled out OldPath. I had to look up white maple - never heard of it. Found out it is silver maple or swamp maple, which we have here. Tree names with local variations are confusing.
