Believe the type used in woodworking is Yellow Poplar. It is cheaper than most other hardwoods, tends to have straight grain, cuts and drills well, and can be stained to appear like other more expensive hardwoods.. I always see poplar in the lumber stores, and wonder why anyone would use it. I guess poplar out west is different than poplar in the east.
We used it to make industrial casting patterns.
