Along with some "other" jobs, I got these taken care of today,

Anyone wanna guess what kind of log, the long one is??

SR

Bark looks rough like black walnut, but the core looks like it has been sitting submerged in mud for a long while

BTW, my friend who used to cut trees for a living said he will help me cut it down, perhaps even as early as this Thursday.

Excellent.

How do you weld the leaf spring so neatly to the softer metal? I once tried to make an ice chisel using a piece of leaf spring for the blade , but ended up with some very ugly bubble gum welds that stuck about as well as recycled duct tape.
I started welding on with truck springs, old bed frames 40 years ago, that and shipyard welding for past 30 years, so I might have a little advantage. Only one rule on hard steel, 70 wire or greater is required, the higher the number the stronger the weld also no water after welding and with truck spring it can really stiffen things up. So the next time your riding around down my way drop off your free broken truck springs.

AND THE WINNER IS...??? Sassafras...

I couldn't have guessed it, as I've not seen a Sas that big before, although my brother got a nice one a few years ago, (that I never got to see) so they are around.

I "took care of it", by getting it cut into two logs the size I wanted and staged to, (at some point) to go on the BSM.

The only reason I guessed sassafras is because the bark looks just like our sassafras. We have quite a bit of it. I love the way it smells when cut, and it splits so easy, nice and straight. I burn quit a bit of it for firewood, but it burns really fast, so mostly fall and spring fires, and starter wood. We have quite a few large ones. It's one of the first trees I was taught to identify. I used to suck on the spring leaves for flavor. We also made tea out of the sapling roots. Not so good. :p hahaha

What are you going to use the wood for?
