Growing up in the 50s our neighbor had 2500 acres, lived in a small log cabin, no electricity or plumbing and had a fire going in fireplace year round since he & wife cooked on it.
Never had a tractor and in one barn was a post war Chrysler with less than 100 miles on it. He drove home from dealer and it frightened him so he parked it.
He worked around part of his place using draft horses but never had a job since he inherited lots of money.
He lived like someone from early 1800s.

Except he had lots of money! But my kind of guy.

Common place here in those days. There is a town about 20 miles from us that didn't have any power until the 1960's. They held a town fair every year to raise money to bring power in. Check out Granby, VT

Vermont is a gorgeous state and we met the nicest people there years ago.
We stayed in Danville, Frys farm (I think that's how it's spelled). We stayed upstairs in the dairy barn in the Fall. Heat from cows warmed the upstairs. Homemade apple pie, donuts, milk & coffee for breakfast.

I just got back from a bicycle ride. It was quite warm today, though the evening has cooled a bit. Road along side the rushing brook. (It's been rainy). Smell of fresh mown hay in the air. A good looking doe munching away in a wet area. Up to a height of land we call BEEC Hill, A fantastic view of the evening sky, thunder clouds off to the SW.
I did not encounter another vehicle for the 4 mile ride, just a young fellow jogging.

Yup! This Vermont is a pretty nice place! ;-)

New project. Hate to do it because it's a pretty tree, but this sandbar willow is finally starting to give up. I think it was 4 stems originally, one broke off or was cut off before we moved in 19 years ago. Then, 15 years ago another stem broke off and the tree soldiered on with the trunk basically hollowed out and a big hole in the side.

I have been surprised it lasted this long, but now the bigger stem split at the hole and started sagging, so it's time for removal. However, we have upper 90's heat indices right now and I am not big on doing tree work when it's that hot, but I need to get past the tree when mowing, so yesterday, I used the Echo pole saw to remove a number of branches to lighten the tree up and hopefully allow it to stand a little longer until I get ready to take it down.

I like odd growing trees like that Runner. Your a better than than I working in that weather.

We had mid ninety's here yesterday too. Just before lunch the power suddenly went out - no storm or wind just a quite hot day. Fiqured it was an over heated transformer some where. But I drove out the road to make sure it wasn't just us that was out and I was surprised to find two 10" diameter trees laying across the power line. They just fell ?? The hot wire broken and lying in the road and the trees supported by the stretched ground wire. Called the power company and they had it alll fixed by 1:15. They are great ! Anyway, they cut the trees and tops just enough so that we could get thru. No way I even thought about cleaning up.
