This old tractor tire is laying beside a road close to one of the gates to my hunt club. Thought I would take a pic and share it. Any guesses as to how long the tire has laid there???

It depends on what kind of tree is growing in it.

Some grow that big in just a few years while others may take 10-15 years to reach that size

Is that one tree or two? Do you know what kind it is?

Is the correct answer even known ?

Ummm, no. Just thought I would ask for some guesses! My own guess is the tree is about 12-14yrs old.

It's actually two tree's growing out of the same stump. I probably should have taken it from a different angle to show that. As for species, it's a Winged Elm tree. The limbs look more flat instead of round. This is because of some bark growth that grows out from the sides, hence the term "winged". See the links:

Hey Kebo...If you had access to a tree borer tool, you could pull a plug out of it, then count the rings.

My guess...about 12 years judging by the way trees grow after being clearcut.

****, like a fool I've been buying my tires at the tire shop. I guess they maybe won't grow well this far north. Do you have to plant a certain tree to get R4"s? What about sizes, if you just leave them will they grow into those big mining truck tires?

Seeing as it's an elm, they don't grow that fast. A maple would do that in 20 years.
Looks like the ground is kind of dry and sandy, with little organic material, which would slow growth.
South Carolina has a longer growing season though.
It looks about a foot thick, the tire rubber is oxidized, but doesn't look like it's flaking or peeling yet.
I'm going to guess about 40 years.

Without doing any research on winded elms, I'm going to guess 14 years. Does the tire have some kind of date code for when it was manufactured? At least you would have an upper limit on the age of the tree.
