Two nights ago I tipped our 35hp New Holland tractor on its side. I was carrying a hog on the fork lift and really didnt want to drop it so I was being pretty careful and going slow. But I wasnt careful enough because I ended up sliding over a muddy ledge covered in tall grass--right into a creek bed. At this time the tractor was still upright.

I had my buddy help me move the pig off the loader, and then I tried to back out of the creek bed. I dont remember exactly what happened because it was dark, and I was really tired. I just remember screaming a bad word, jumping off, and looking over my shoulder to see the fork SMACK the hog as the tractor went on its side.(dont worry it was already dead)

I pulled the tractor out with a manual winch, but now it wont start. I am really not experienced (obviously) so I was hoping some of you experts could give me a few tips.

Definitely go read the threads that POLO has linked, JORDAN.

You say that the tractor will not start. If it does not CRANK, you are
hydro-locked. Sometimes the oil in your cylinders that is causing
this problem will drain back into the crankcase by itself, if you wait long
enough (a few days).

Diesels are built pretty tough, but you still risk breaking a con rod or
flywheel tooth if you try to crank a hydro-locked engine with the starter.
Be careful.

I hope you shut it down when it went over.

I'm kinda surprised no seatbelt and rops???

in any case.. i agree with what has already been said..

I might even pull injectors and turn over to clear cyls.

then check fluids.. and check for damage from when she went over.

bleed injector pump, and injectors.. then go for it.

The only question I missed on a Army Spec 5 verbal test was "What is "HydroStatic Lock"! I since learned it's when oil, diesel, coolant fill the cylinder enough to prevent the piston to come all the way up through a cycle. I'd pull all the injectors, and turn it by breaker bar before anything else! A complete fluid change appears to be in your future! ~S

1) Clear top of piston of fluids by removing GPs and hand crank 4-5 turns then 10 sec of starter turns. (GP holes are now fluid drain holes, prepare for this)

2) Check and top off all fluids.

3) Start and test run.

Wow...thanks for all the advice. Yesterday I started removing the glow plugs but got interrupted. Im going to copy the "big flip" stuff because that looks pretty close to my situation. (remove glow plugs, bleed fuel lines, possibly remove muffler) Except my tractor was on its side for 24 hours.

Don't forget to wash the battery and tray and all the area around it with baking soda solution to stop the acid that leaked out of battery.
Even if you don't see it now do it you will see results of acid in a couple of months if you don't

Good idea. I will do that. I already have destroyed a pair of jeans from the acid........either that or killer moths....

I was a little nervous about just pulling the GP's and cranking away. If it easy to crank manully and you see oil coming out for a few revolutions you should be comfortable that nothing serious has happened. You could probably try a quick crank with the starter. Quick pointer, be ready for a potential big mess with oil spraying everywhere. Cover the area above the best you can without it being too restrictive as the force coming out will blow it away. The clean up will be a little easier. But I would defintely trade the mess for the smooth sound of the engine running nice. As other have said the fluids may just settle back after 24 hrs or a few days, but why take a chance on an expensive investment. With that in mind don't forget to topup or check all fluids and look for signs of mixing of the wrong fluids.

Good luck and hope it all works out.

We've thrown a old beach towell over engines like that, when purging them ( like when oiling the cyls on an old gasser for a few days, then rolling it over.. etc.. )
