Tractor speed

Turns out the post was edited at the same time I posted that info. Originally the OP mentioned a YM180 on his first post, which is why I used the YM220 as reference since I couldn't find info for the YM180.

I guess it's always better to quote posts, so it doesn't create confusion like this.

Doing the charted comparison of both, it seems gear selection 5 works at 4MPH either way, or just close enough. His YM3810 has the PowerShift, It's the same as my machine. Yet, I don't have the turbo, so I can't say gear selector and Power-Shift index number to hit the 4MPH on his machine. My machines' rear chassis is the same too. 3T80 vs. 3T84T add in PowerShift and it's too hard to say.

Yes, his other options of clocking it or tracking it would be the best solution overall. :)

Wow, plenty of info here. I've printed it out and digest it when I get into this thing. Thanks to all.

This really hurts to admit that I gave the wrong info on tractor type. So here's the thing, I couldn't remember the name of the tractor so I had to asked my wife. Got that right. Then neither of us could remember the model. The YM 180 never seemed quite right but I have it parked in the shop, about a hundred yards away, and was too lazy to check for sure, besides it was raining. I did say that I was rather senior and perhaps some of you can relate to that. Sorry +++ I'll do better in future. Anyhow I got a lot of info that will get me goin' on this project and I thank you all again.

Oh, don't worry, I'm not even a senior yet and I'm having those moments. ;) At least that's what my DW tells me.

Your avatar icon on the post says YM3810. That has the great 3T84T engine. It's the cream of the crop with it's twin the YM4220. The 3T84 comes in plenty of variations and is used in wide applications of machines.

I do have the engine manual in PDF, but it's the non-turbo manual. So, it would be 95% accurate for your needs if you want it.

Thanks for your generous offer. In fact I do have a tractor manual. I've had the machine for 24 years but don't use it too often anymore. I keep it in the shop on a battery tender and as you know I pretty much forget about it. It's been a great little tractor over the years and the only thing I ever put on it was an oil sending unit. No complaints from me.

Not sure about Yanmar. I have a Kubota L3400. with it in 1High it is about 4 mph. I use this for spraying speed.

Com'on guys, you're giving me a headache. Okay, I have it figured out. I follow my wife in the car. Rods, rods? I haven't heard of that measurement since I was a kid. Too many years in the big city I guess.
I figured with him being so old and all...really speed= rpm x rtr ÷ 168 x rgr

Okay guys, one of you fine folks have solved the problem. I have ordered a GPS system and I'm good to go. Should have thought of that myself but I'm pretty sure I will be back next time a problem arises. Thanks again.

A GPS makes it easy. I found out with my jd 2720 that 2200 rpm in low gear with the forward peddle mashed to the floor, gives me 4 mph.

Seems like a lot of work to justify an intentionally inaccurate instrument... unless you can buy military versions that is.

Not so much on the strobe method or simply marking a 1mi stretch and using a stopwatch?

This is all very interesting, but not really the most relevant discussion regarding how to properly spay 10 acres. You could theoretically spray at any speed as long as you get enough chemical on the ground. (Think crop duster.)

With any spray, the goal is to apply x gallons per acre. Best approach, in my opinion, is to put 10 gallons or 30 gallons in your sprayer and then drive the speed that feels right on your tractor, and on your land, and see how far it goes. You can just do this with water if you want -- I'd do it with my first tank of spray and then adjust from there.

I have a really handy 40 gallon sprayer, 3 pt. hitch, that I use on a 30 HP Kubota. I know that driving a decent comfortable reasonable speed over my fairly rough terrain that it will put down right at 30 gallons per acre using the boom sprayer. Once you establish that, the rest is easy.

Forget speed. Mark off an acre. For example, if you find that it takes you 30 gallons to cover an acre at the speed that feels right and at the spray rate of your equipment, then adjust your mix to equal xx amount of chemical into 30 gallons per acre.

For my purposes, chemical spray is cheaper than my time. Since you're only spraying 10 acres I would think the same applies. For that reason, I always mix spray concentrations on the high end to make up for my lack of precision in equipment, speed control, etc.

This will only cost you about a 1/2 hour of your time. Fill up your sprayer with water and go spray an acre. Don't worry about speed. Just drive it like it feels right and note your range setting, gear setting, etc. Note how much water it takes to cover an acre. The rest is easy.

Darn, I thought the topic was simply tractor speed.

Silly me, I just buy the proper flow nozzles to match 2nd low and check pump pressure when needed. Guess I should measure something next time.

You're right. That was the topic. But it still doesn't do anything about making sure he's getting the right amount of spray out of his equipment per acre. I think he asked the wrong question. Just my opinion. . .
