Tractor hydraulics leaking down

If the 3 point leaks down after you shut the engine off would the problem be in the pump or the lift cylinder?

Unless it leaks all the way down in an hour or so it isn't really a problem in most cases.
Mine leaks down because the valve leaks a bit....takes over 24 hrs with the counterweights (ballast) to go 1/2 way down. I normally drop my load anyway, serves as an anchor.

In General leak down when the machine is off is normal and ok, assuming it is slow. If there is a problem the likely issue is in 1 of 2 areas - the control valve or a leak in the piston (internal valve).

My 8n drops in a few seconds whenever I push in the clutch, so I have to shift into neutral and get off the clutch to keep the lift up.

I think you surely have a lift cylinder problem. On the 8N, the pump is in the hydraulic reservoir under the seat and only works when the clutch is released. I would say you have an 80-90% chance of it being the lift cylinder seals. If you plan to do the work yourself, get an I&T Manual available at Tractor Supply or online at many sites including the Amazon.com link posted.

I have the manual and have been reading it. I understand that after you do something once you become an expert. I looking here for experts. In a few months maybe I can act like lone just a little. I think my little red belly was really abused by the previous owner, judging by the weld repairs and damaged parts. I suspect he was using a too large finishing mower behind it. I've gone through the brakes, looking to rebuild the steering box next, then this lift issue. Thanks for your input, and I agree with your assessment.
