Tractor Capabilities VS. Attachment

Morning,

I am in the market for a brush hog but do not know much about it. I have a Kubota B2910 (25 HP PTO??). Cutting about 5 acres of horse pasture. The pasture has been kind of neglected but does not have saplings (maybe a handful), just a bunch of random grasses and weeds. I plan to rehab it and plant fescue.

So my question is; can I get away with a 5ft light duty mower? Will this be to much strain on the tractor? If so, maybe a 4ft medium duty? Reasonably priced brand suggestions would be great too.

I don't have a "brush hog" yet but everything I have read seems to say the mower should be at least as wide as the rear tire width of you tractor... My SCUT with wheel spacers is 47.5 inches and has 19hp at PTO so it seems to me a medium duty 54 inch mower would be the ticket for me...

I think you will have no problem with a 5' cutter. I have run a 5' Rhino brush cutter on my B2710HST that has about 19hp at the PTO for 20 years with no issues. I cut a 5 acre field once a year that grows some good saplings in that timeframe. Rule of thumb I followed over the years was about 5 PTO hp per foot of brush cutter.

21hp massy has ran a 5 ft woods mower for 10 yr. for lawns. it struggles in 12 in high grass.

a five ft bush hog is a strain and i would not run one very much on this tractor with 17 hp at the pto.

a 24 hp would run a 6 ft woods type in light grass and should handle a 5 ft bush hog. heavy grass would strain a 6 ft woods.

I sold my brush cutter and bought a 7' Woods rear discharge finish mower that does a much better job on pastures. Set the height up initially to 8-10" or so, then groom it down. I can run in top gear now. not even on the governor. Ground speed is the regulating power on my fields, not tractor H.P. Slow initially. The comments on a wide enough machine are right on. That's why I went with 7'.

a neighbor has one of the 7 footers and i sure like the way it cuts.

i would consider one for sure.

You will be fine with a light duty 60" Rotary Cutter weighing 400/450 pounds. 400/450 pounds will be a good match to your 1,800 pound bare weight tractor and 22 PTO horsepower. You should be able to mow dry grass 40" tall, full 60" swathe width.

Almost all Rotary Cutter components are sourced in China or South Korea these days.

Consider optional chain debris guards so you can mow backing the tractor.

B2910 develops its rated horsepower at 2,600 rpm.

I had a Kubota B3300SU with the same engine.

If you do not attenuate the engine and transmission noise it will get to you mowing at near full throttle.

I've got a good pair of noise canceling headphones I wear while I'm on the tractor.

As far as your 1st comment; are you saying I need to run the tractor at 2,600 rpm in order to operate the brush hog effectively?

Do I need to worry about gear box rating when I purchase?

There should be a mark on your tack for 540 PTO rpm which is what you want to run most rear pto implements, that is its effective speed, it is not at max throttle. It has been a few weeks since I was on the tractor but I think it is somewhere around 2400 tractor rpm. If you get a 5' brush cutter, it will be rated for way more HP than your tractor has or if your wondering about PTO speed, the gearbox is geared to work at the 540 pto rpm standard although you can run it less if the conditions allow it.
