I looked at the other side. There's no guide plate. Considering I bought it used, I suppose it's possible that someone has been into the engine before. I've had it for 9 years. I would think that something would have happened sooner.

A quick look on parts tree shows PLATE, GUIDE Part# 32 146 09-S Note: (AFTER S/N 3633510943) Is that what you are referring to? So we discussed the reasons why push rods bend early on. What did you find out?

I still have not found a cause for my problem. Only one of the rods was bent. When I removed the valve cover both rods fell out. Now that I think about it, wouldn't the undamaged rod have stayed in place? My initial guess was the rocker arm(s) loosened up somehow. I'm now wondering if my problem is a little deeper.

I don't know that it makes a difference, but my engine is SV735-0011. The plate shows up in both parts lists. Like I mentioned earlier, I pulled the valve cover off the other side and found no guide plate on that side either.
it's probably a fix they used because of a problem that shows up after a certain amount of time.. they would not add that if it wasn't needed..

Well, I'm going to order one for each side. Then I still need to figure out if I have an issue beyond the push rods to see why the one bent.

studs pulling out, or nuts loosening could do that. besides the usual, which has been suggested.. I'd imagine the guide plates prevent the push rods from wandering where they are not supposed to be, preventing problems..

It's well worth a try. I'll let you know when I get the parts in

I'm not sure why I looked at the engine this afternoon because I'm still waiting for my guide plates to arrive, but something looked off to me as I was looking over the rocker arms. I'm no expert, but don't rocker arms use studs with adjusting nuts? The rocker arms on my engine use regular bolts. That would mean the only possible adjustment is on the push rod side of the rocker. The repair manual shows an adjuster on the bolt as well as the push rod. Seems off to me.

The point here is that engines built above serial number 3633510943 used a guide plate plus a different style rocker retainer than what you have. It seems logical to me that your serial number is before 3633510943.

My serial number is 3602010043. So my engine apparently never had guide plates. I have them on order. Can I use them on this engine? I'm also assuming the engine used bolts instead of studs. That makes the only place I can adjust the lash is at the push rod. I'll have to figure out how that works. I've not even sure it can be adjusted there.

Grrrrrr. So I had to wait forever to get the needed parts. I received them two days ago and attempted to install them today. The push rods are approximately 1/4" to long. E-replacementparts.com has two different numbers listed for my engine. I wrote to them and asked which one to purchase. I purchased their recommended item. If I were one of the seven dwarves, I would not be Happy. I'd be Grumpy. :smiley_aafz:

BTW. I ordered the guide plates even though my engine was built before they were used. I figure having them is probably a good thing.

To bad you didn't think of it. You could have told the seller that the push rods you have are X inches long. Then they could have sent the correct ones or just said that they don't have the correct ones.

Lesson learned with them. You would think if you provide the model and serial number, they could give you the right info.

I completely forgot to post the final result. I received the correct push rods. Everything is back together and running well. Just in time for snow blowing.
