On "Good Friday" a tornado came through Murfreesboro, Tennessee. A friend of mind caught the tail end of it and lost 39 mature trees on her property, an 8 acre yard/estate. Being that I spent about a week doing the clean-up with many volunteers along the way she gave me the logs.
Had a guy come out with a band saw mill. The logs produced 2046 board feet of oak, walnut, sassafras, and cedar.
That's me toting a board wearing as my friends call it my "father Abraham" hat.
The last two shots are the end results of that very hot and long day. About 40% of that is walnut.

It's sad that the trees were killed in the tornado; but I'm happy to see that the wood should end up being turned into something nice (e.g. furniture, cabinets, etc).

Have fun creating!

Thats what I like to see wood used for. I hate watching walnut and oak cut up and burned.

Good to see some good from a nasty storm.

Sad about the storm but what a haul! Gorgeous wood. What are your plans for the lumber?

What are your plans for the lumber?

I don't really know yet. It'll take over a year for the wood to air dry. I do finish carpentry and woodworking for a living plus my own projects so I'm sure it won't be hard to find worthy uses for the wood.

The logs sure gave my little tractor a workout. I have a set of QA pallet forks that sure came in handy for the storm clean-up and moving the logs and lumber around.

The only way I was able to move the big oak that is pictured on the mill was to push it around. The log weight estimator on the Forestry Forum calculated it at about 5,500 .lbs.

Shane does the guy with the mill charge by the day or the board foot? If you don't mind what are his rates?

nice job shane...some quality lumber you just saved from someone's fireplace

@ 5500lbs that log would've given a lot of our tractors a "workout":D:D

He charges .20 a board foot, mileage, and $20 for a blade if you hit a nail or such.

The thing is, we started at 7:30 that morning and we did not finish until 5:30 that evening with only 30 minutes for lunch. Not only did he run the saw, he also offloaded the slabs, helped roll logs. Once the log was on the mill hydraulics took over as for moving the log around. It got up to the mid 90's that day and the humidity had to be about 99% :).

We hit one nail.

The total of the bill, 441.20. He charged 20.00 for mileage, 12.00 for the blade since it was already and older blade. The guy was top notch, very intelligent. His cuts were all even and straight, no waves or uneven thicknesses. I think his rates are too low considering the amount of work he does and using a $27,000 machine.

He does this work on the side and teaches high school full time during the school year.

Thanks Shane, I have considered looking for a local with a potable saw but didn't have any idea what the going rates were. It sounds like a good deal to me, looking at the hardwood you ended up with. I have 20 -30 pines that are lumber grade I need to move for a barn and local loggers don't have any interest in that small of stand.
